More than likely your plugged with dust at the copper ventilation tube insert go and dust all that out. This means taking it apart and doing a complete cleaning. These are managed by thermostats which go off when to hot. When most laptops computers are on and off again over and over or periodic over time showing that sign, "Heating" is the issue you can place fans do a lap fan and still have this issue until you open it up and do a really good removal of dust compaction. Also I suggest since it will be opened up if you have never done this take it in to have it done correctly and also change out the Thermo paste a well while your at it.

If this does not fix the matter then the LCD screen is going out or needs a new back lamp installed. That is about it. Thanks for posting your question. John

If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LEDflashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faultyinverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow myinstructions to identify the fault and possible fix :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3598095-faulty_laptop_lcd_screen

DV1130 hooked up to TV, DVD works great. VHS has

If you are using RCA cables (Red Yellow White) the video (yellow) could be bad or not in the connector all the way. When the VCR mode is selected try pulling the yellow connector out then back in and see if anything changes on the tv.

If you are using another type cable let me know and I will help you diagnose.

Hope this helps

DV1130

I had the same problem. Turned out the Child Lock was on. Push the Child Lock button on the remote (it's below the 0 key) and that should fix the problem.

I need to know how to get the progressive scan feature turned off so I can view DVD's.

Thanks for the progressive scan advice. I have a Go-Video DV1130 Combo I didnt have a DVD in the combo and I pressed and held the stop button on the combo instead of the remote and it came out of the progressive scan mode so maybe it works both ways? But anyway Thanks for the advice it sure helped me.
