Damaged amature causing lack of speed variablity?

My 395 will only run up to about setting 4... I took it apart, cleaned the switch and still the same problem While it was apart I checked the amature and found it had deep grooves carved intoa number of the metal coils.... could this be causing the problem?

That could cause a problem not allowing the brushes to seat properly. Does it arc excessively? If so you might need a new armature. Also while you had it apart did you check the bearings for being rough or tight?

I took apart my Dremel 395 Type 3 and the spring popped out for the shaft lock. Where does the spring attach to?

It doesn't attach anywhere, that's why it popped out. It should just fit in a recess, pushing the lock button outward.

Unit wont run at all, yes I do have power, took apart and 1 of the brushes was stuck in slot and it looks like its been really hot.do I need to replace the switch assy. dremel 395 type 4,

I would think that just the brushes, they should slide freely in the slot. check also the condition of the armature for arcing or raised commutator bars.

Will not turn on. Bushings are fine/replaced.

Problem is more than likely that the plastic brush holder got hot with continuous use and the brushes n longer slide smoothly in their housing. Sometimes they even twist a little. The only solution to this is to replace the brush holder-variable switch assembly.

My Dremel 395 type 4 does not run until I spin the chuck and then only runs at high speed.

Sounds like a switch or brushes. You can go to Dremel.com and they have a toll free number for their tech services and you can also download a breakdown for this tool.

I own a Dremel model 395 type 5 variable speed and it suddenly stopped working. I was wondering if it was common for the switches to go bad or if it's known for other parts to cause it not to turn on.

I would recommend going to Dremel.com and asking their tech section about this. I have one also and mine works fine other than a small amount of heat at the spindle area.
