7210 can't fax or scan

Hi I have a hp 7210 and I can't fax or scan. When I try either option you can hear the mechanism moves across the glass and then it makes a gear spinning fast noise and goes back and I get an error (scanner failure, turn power off). I reset the power and try again and the same thing hapens. The funny thing is that if I make a copy of something it works perfect, woulden't it be the same to copy as to fax ???

SOURCE: scanner failure message

If you can scan/copy from the glass then you have a bad Scanner Motor Assembly.

Lines on copy/scan/fax

You have something on your "scanner glass", the narrow piece of glass that the scanner "looks" through during adf use. Get some window cleaner or rubbing alcohol and clean it with a damp cloth. Often, it's correction fluid (Liquid Paper). A little dot is all it takes because the paper is traveling across the dot, effectively drawing a line down the length of the page.

When we send a fax with our HP 1040 Fax Machine, the people receiving our ads for newspapers, say it is too dark to read. Help!!

Lift the cover of the sheet feeder, and clean the filter glass that the documents are scanned across. If you make a copy on the machine this will give you an indication of the quality you are sending, so perhaps make a copy first, clean glass then try again. If the quality is still bad, then you have a deeper problem, such as the LED array (lights that light up during scan) is dying, or the optics within the machine are dirty -this would require the removal of the top of the machine to access and clean -not worth the trouble.
Hope this helps.
