not necessarily--- the broken drive cable can be removed /replaced by removing the trimmer head from the shaft at the bottom
undo the clamp and if there is a small screw/ bolt into the shaft undo that as well and pull the head off
the flexible drive cable will slip out
check the ends and they should be square in form
Mostly the cable breaks but occasionally that square section will wear round
slip in a new cable and reassemble

replacement flex shafts for dremels and craftsman tools are sold where ever there bits are sold

hello,,There are only three things to cause trimmer head not to turn.
1.Outer shaft has sliped down from engine because screw has fallen out and ring has come loose,
2.Shaft has broken due to excess stress,such as putting on a differant trimmer head or binding up,
3.Trimmer head striped.

This sounds like the flexible drive shaft inside of the main shaft has a stripped ferrule. In order for you to fix this, you will have to take the main shaft off of the motor housing and pull the flexible shaft out of the inside. The replacement part number is 530056570 and should be about $12 to replace. Call the number on the unit to order replacement parts or go to your local sears.

if your car got power but vibrates when accelerating...means the drive shaft joints near the gearbox is wearing out..or just check the whole drive shaft...if the flexible rubber seals is broken means you got dirt inside your CV joint...dont ignore this! sevrvice and replace the rubber as soon as possible!! if your drive shaft got loose...replace it..

I believe what you need to do is remove the 3 screws on the trimmer head to remove the head from the lower shaft. After the head is off you can look down into where the shaft goes and be able to use some needlenose pliers or something of the sort to pull the broken part out.<!-- from fixya rte -->

There are so many details missing from your question...
first, does the shaft break down into 2 pieces ( so as to accept different attatchements) ?
if so which end is broke?
second, how did you determine the shaft is broke?
have you eliminated the possibility of a stripped end in the head?
Have you eliminated the possibility of a stripped end in the clutch ( the most likely cause of failure) ?
Have you eliminated a failed clutch?

I suggest you diagnose the unit carefully first then decide what it is worth to you to fix versus replacement. A shaft is about $30 from your local dealer.

it comes out but you have to lossen the screws holding the engine on at the base and pull it out? the other end has a locking nut remove the spool and loosen

Dealer says shaft has broken. Stihl had a problem with some FS45's doing this. They are trying to have it repaired under warranty.
