I have that problem before and best way to identify drivers for XP is to use program called driver genius.

You might first check to see if ide is active in the bios.

Sorry to here about your driver problems.
1st. Unless you have deleted to folder, you should have a HP folder (example) SwSetup on your drive, with all necessary drivers.
2nd. If you have removed this folder, you can bring up HP.com and type in your Model# O.S. and or let the program search for you.
You can download any or all drivers and save them to your Hard disk.
3rd. If all else fails and you have a valid Backup, you can F11 at system start up and reload all drivers and programs, to original factory specs.
Keep in mind, reloading, will remove everything and if that's where you keep your backup, your in trouble.
