Hello mrobinert,
The sound you may be hearing could be the filament transformer breaking down or the magnetron tube failing ..they will arc and eventually fail. If you aren't getting any microwave energy ( to heat material in the cooking compartment) then in all probability it is either the transformer, magnetron or high voltage capacitor.. None of which are something you want to repair yourself... My advice is that if the cost to repair exceeds teh cost to replace then just buy a replacement model. If yours is under 1 year old, then you may be able to negotiate and get a replacement from the store where you purchased it.. If it is older than a year, it's probably cost effective to just buy a new model.
Regards,
Rick

What causes a ge spacemaker above the range microwave to quit heating and makes a deeper pitched noise?

This louder, 60 cycle hum is usually caused by a bad magnetron. The unit will not heat when this happens. Repair cost can exceed $100.

We have a JVM 1443bk02 ge microwave. Today the turntable stopped working. You can depress the key pad on/off button but that makes no difference for the turntable. How do you test to make sure it is the...

The problem with the turntable could be the following:
  1. Gummed up lubrication or bad bearings. Check to see if there is any food on the turntable spindle.
  2. If that is ok, check to see if the belt is loose or broken.
  3. If that is ok, check the motor. A meter will confirm whether there is power going to the motor, when you depress the keypad on button. Use the AC Volts setting, if you have about 21 VAC and the motor does not work, then the motor is bad.

Turntable and cooking power not working, everything else does.

You have a shorting membrane keypad.

If and when an oven is coming on or doing anything by itself, this is very dangerous and can result in a fire.

So until it is repaired, please leave it unplugged or leave the door open when it's not in use, and please do not leave it running unattended.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please include your full model number from the tag in or on the unit) for a free estimate and free tips & do-it-yourself advice.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Microwave not working, please suggest

Your magnetron tube has failed. According to the warranty on the Profile Series microwave ovens, the magnetron is covered for 5 years from the date of purchase, but labor is not included. I would call GE Customer Service and when they ask for the model number (which begins with JVM) and the serial number, be sure to give the date of purchase as the date you closed on your house. If they insist upon charging you for a service call and labor, I would call my builder's Customer Service Department and demand (very nicely) that they intervene with GE to waive the service and labor charges. That worked for me (Lennar Homes).

Works but no heat

Possibly a blown fuse inside, or a defective magnatron. If you decide to open the unit, please unplug it first!

GE Spacemaker JVM1631BB005 making noise

Many thanks to e3enigma above! I removed the synch motor under the turntable; all other microwave functions work fine and the grinding noise is gone, hooray! A trip to the appliance parts store tomorrow for a replacement synchronous motor and all should be well. Thanks again!

No heat

Magnatron is suspect. Need to put a voltmeter and see if the input (primary) side to the high-voltage transformer (big heavy iron thing in there) is getting 120Vac. Don't touch the other (high voltage) side of this transformer. If the power is there, you are looking at replacing the magnatron. Its affordable if you do it yourself - buy the part on EBAY - lookup "universal magnatron"
