Canon Powershot S1 IS - Both in LCD and View finder - only blank is coming

I bought a Canon Powershot S1 IS 2 years back in Korea. It was working very fine. When i switched it on last week i was shocked to see that it was not working. 1. The camera was swicted ON 2. I was able to see the already taken pictures. 3. When i change the mode to picture taking mode, i could see only a BLANK ( just a dark screen with some scattrerd white dots). 4. I could able use the click button. 5. But the image was same as what i saw in the LCD/View finder. when i was discussing this issue with my friends i was shocked to know that, one of my friends who bought the same camera with me in korea also is facing the same problem. is it something related to manfucturing issue? We bought the camera at same time and got the problem almost at same time. Can you please let me knwo what could be the issue?

And in addition to the page I listed for several models having this CCD sensor problem, see the specific page for Canon cameras at: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&fcategoryid=225&modelid=13390&keycode=2112&id=29819

The problem lies in a defective CCD sensor. Visit this page for repair directions - free repair is being offered by Canon as well as free shipping both ways. http://www.imaging-resource.com/badccds.html

I had the same problems as the others described. I brought it into a local camera store and they told me I had to send to back to Cannon and it would cost about $250 to repair which is the price of a new camera. They said it was probably the optics were out of alignment. Like the rest of you it was working fine when i last used it and i had not droped it and had any other problems. Does anyone have any suggestions

Did you find a solution to this problem? I am having the same issue. I bought my camera about 2 years ago. It was working fine till a couple of days ago. Now, all of a sudden, all I see is a blank screen when I try to shoot pictures/video. I can view already stored images on the memory card. Please let me know if you guys have found a solution.

Sorry this aint a solution. I too have the same problem as Mr.Gandhi is facing. I too bought this camera approximately 2 years ago.Since last cupla weeks, im facing this problem on a random note...I cud take a few snaps in between and upload without any problem but again the camera could not capture new images even with a set of 4 new batteries. Whenever i switch the mode to take snaps from preview mode (which is still working fine), the LCD or the view finder becomes dark with some blue colored horizontal lines appearing as if its because of some kinda interference!

    Hi All,
At last I got my Camera repaired. The easiest way is to contact the Canon Helpdesk and as per their directions drop you camera at the nearest Canon Care Centre.
If it is a genuine CCD senson problem, Canon replaces the sensor free of cost(which they did for me)
But this entire process requires atleast a month.
    Cheers

I have a canon powershot s1is. There is no image through view finder or on the LCD. Menu works and theme pictures come up. It also still displays previous pictures already on memory card. No new...

This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager, and is a known defect for your particular model camera.. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free if you live in the US, Canada, and a select few other countries. If you live outside the US, contact Canon support for your country to see if they'll still honor the advisory (some still will, especially if you stress you knowledge that this is a known defect of the camera). They may also include free shipping both ways (free shipping varies with countries). This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please see this link for more info.

Affected cameras with this problem include: A60, A70, A75, A80, A85, A95, A300, A310, S1 IS, S60, S230, S400, S410, S500, SD100, SD110, IXUS V2/V3/300/400/430/500/II/IIs, IXY Digital 200a/300a/320/400/450/500/30/30a

Black LCD monitor on Powershot S410

that is not a malfunction, if the "display" button is pressed, the LCD turns off, (black), but if the mode switch is rotated to movie or panorama, it comes back on but will go black again if switched into the other 2 modes. when in one of the 2 modes that show black, simply press "display" and the LCD will come back on.

FYI "GURU", the CCD malfunction manifests as a purple colored screen with various levels of distortion, not black

Canon S1 IS:the "Information View" is stuck in display at powerup

I had exactly the same problem and I was very frustrated. Then I learned that Canon published a Service Notice in October 2006? : the CCD Image Sensor on some Canon cameras becomes defective. Canon says they will repair it free of charge for repairs and for shipping if your problem is indeed caused by a malfunctioning CCD sensor, even if it is out of warranty. I called them at 1-800-828-4040. I was offered 2 options.
Option #1): send it in for repairs. (If the CCD isn't the problem, they will repair it at a charge of at least $140.)
Options #2) except an offer for a newer camera (the SD 890 IS) at a greatly reduced price + shipping.
I chose Option #2. Good Luck.

Black lcd monitor with lines runing arond it like crazy Any Help

oh. good. its not fault of LCD. your CCD has fault.
according to your problem you wont get photos also recorded in your camera i think.

but if you are able to use a view finder and take photos means its not a costly fault.

else means try this.
connect it to your TV usng AV cord. if you are able to see pictures means there is some fault with the connections inside for LCD from CCD.

No image in view finder

Common fault with these models and is caused by faulty CCD sensor. Canon will probably repair free of charge so send it in . As I said very common with this model.

Powershot S1 IS trouble shooting in images of lcd monitor

Try playing back pictures you know were captured properly ( either with another properly working camera or with your camera before the problem with quality has appeared ). If the image is ok in playback but 'noisy' in capture mode then the CCD sensor is faulty /on its way out. Ask Canon if they repair CCD faults on this model free of charge.
