Light works, but no sewing. The presser foot is down, both doors are closed, the swing-out arm affliated with the needle is in place, but still no sewing. I subatituted the foot control from my daughter's Elna serger and it doesn't engage the sewing function either. What am I doing wrong, or what could have gone wrong? HELP!

I had that same problem and it was due to the thread being too tight. Put the thread net on your thread and it should be ok.

This also happens when the bobbin winder is too close to the right-like when you wind a bobbin and don't put it back or not back all the way to the left.

Check the needle to make sure it is inserted with the flat side of the shaft toward the back of the machine.
Also, check to be sure the needle is not bent.
Remove the presser foot and see if the needle clears the opening in the needle plate and pulls up the bobbin thread.
If all of the above checks out, switch to a presser foot with a wider opening.
If not, the machine needs to be serviced as it may be the timing has to be adjusted.
Whenever you pick up a machine that has been serviced, try it out before taking it home.

There is a presser foot pressure dial on the left end of the machine, make sure it is on 3 or higher.
Testimonial: "Thanks--Don't know how the wheel was moved, but that fixed the problem. Now if I could only find the owner's manual!! "

take it to a sewing machine repair shop, so the needle bar can be checked, & also the timing
