Question about Sony VAIO Computers & Internet
My sony vaio laptop has a fan problem. The fan produces a noise. It was irritating before, but now suddenly my laptop wont start. I want to fix my laptop at any cost. Please, someone tell me the best place to repair my laptop in Kathmandu, Nepal.
What your going to have to do is right away purchase a fan for it. Hopefully the fan not working may have shut it down automatically to prevent damage. It runs on a thermostat so when the voltage or a certain temp occurs the machine is designed to shut off. That is a good thing.
Now the repair is rather difficult if you have never done it before. But rather simple if you have. It is really just removing the top of the laptop where the keyboard is then taking out a couple of screws and unplugging the fan from the board. Because you did not specify the exact model number which is on the back of your laptop or noted on the face or the screen I cannot possibly find you a link to purchase one. However do not start the computer anymore until this is replaced otherwise you may end up purchasing more than a fan.
So look up the number go online and purchase the fan you need. If your not worried about the cost take it in and have it repaired at a shop. Or have it repaired by someone that knows how to do this. Get back to me if you want to and tell me the model number and I can search out the fan you will need for it and give more detailed links to get a visual on the repair at Youtube there is a lot of repair videos there as well more than likely you will find a visual on how to do the repair yourself there. Just type in your model and make at Youtube.com search box and see if there is a video on your computer to show you what you need to know.
I hope this gave you some sort of idea to at least begin. John

Hi Lisa, I am not an expert and I am also new at this site. But I believe I have a solution for you! I had this problem before with a similar model. It is usually a problem with the memory chip or memory slot: 1. Remove one of the memory chip 2. replace it with a sony compatible memory chip. * not all memory chips works with sony so you have to make sure! If it is the slot: 1. compare it with the working slot to see if there is any difference. 2. If there is a bended solder try to bend it back to the correct position. 3. If you can't find the problem you might want to buy a larger memory chip and work with only one slot. Good luck

the fan is screwed together with the motherboard, the only way i figured is to separate it is completely unscrew the motherboard, cd drives.....then unscrew the fan from the bottom side of the motherboard....
i took the fan out just today, wantted to add some lubricating oil to it, but then can't manage to separate the blades & expose the centre
how much did the replacement fan cost? i am in canada, not even sure sony stores here have it.

SOURCE: Sony Vaio fan making noise
Not sure of a user cause for the fan to run full speed, unless you are using the laptop in a high heat environment, or setting it on a bed or other area where it is not getting adequet cooling air. If it does it right away, when you turn it on , cold, then there might be a laptop hardware problem. If you leave your laptop on all the time, then you might be inducing the problem. I had a HP high performance laptop, that the fans would not turn on at all till it ran an hour or so, then they would stay on loud for 10 or 15 minutes, then shut off, then cycle.

The sony VGN-S460 seems to have an inherent problem with their cpu fans. It is apparent that the fan uses a ball bearing system which over time becomes worn and causes the grinding sound.
The only solution is to replace the entire fan assembly as they are inseparable.
