My oven racks are rusted and they look light green. My landlord was supposed replace them a year ago and I'm finally ready to do it myself. Has anyone ever encountered green rust? Can I clean it or should I get new racks??

I would replace the racks, when it becomes rusty green it is time to get rid of the old and bring in the new.

SOURCE: Rust inside the microwave.

The areas can be sanded and painted, but first make sure there are no holes rusted through. If it's all surface rust, then sand and clean as best as you can. If you have any areas rusted through - get rid of the microwave.
Use the paint sparingly - don't try to cover in one or two coats. Best results are obtained with very, very light coats drying 10 minutes or so (depending on the humidity) in between. 10- 15 coats usually works well.
It's best to do this outside, as you'll have lots of overspray.

As far as the paint - the best I've used for the last 20 years or so comes from A.M.I. Parts. You can find them @ www.amiparts.com or toll free 1-800-522-1264.

SOURCE: bottom of GE interior door microwave is burnt/rusted

just use sand paper to clean the rust then use some high temperature paint (sold in tins) eg spray paint but it must be labeled high temperature and spray 2 to 3 coats . your microwave should be safe again

SOURCE: Deep Cleaning techniques for GE spacemaker Convection microwave

Try simple green. It is great at eating through grease. It may take a few times but it works. It is biodegardable. I used it at one of my old jobs for cleaning grease off of glass and use it in my home as well.

SOURCE: my microwave oven has are rust spots;can I paint over them?

Yes, you can paint over the spots and no, it's not dangerous. I'd let the paint thoroughly dry before using the oven -- it could otherwise cause paint to buckle/ripple/etc.

Microwave light on, but not cooking

You need to give a brand name and model number so we have a better I idea what to tell you. And I work on appliances. But there is a point when it just doesn't pay to try and fix it. Evidently it has lived a long life, and now its just giving up.

Hamilton Beach hb-p90d23al-dj keeps blowing fuses

If the microwave oven is less than 7 years old the problem is in the magnetron, " the most expensive part " or the inverter board, either way costly adventure, good for target practice.

How to use a self clean magic chef oven bought 24 years ago

Self Clean Magic Chef Ovens, clean by Nuking the baked on grime etc... As I recall, invoking the self clean (some models will allow you to specify a time - 2 hours for light cleaning to 4 hours for heavy), will ramp the oven temperature up to as high as 900 degrees F (as opposed to the mid 300 norm). YOu probably want to remove any racks etc before hand, and wipe up crumbs etc...

Once completed, and cooled, wipe out the ash that is left over, witha damp cloth.

Thermandor Microwave MBES is shutting off.

That is a possibility but there other parts that can come into play, a bad magnetron " filiment sometimes opens" high voltage diode " sometimes cracks and developes a high level short, and finally the high voltage capacitor " will normally short" I do recommend a professional in this case.

Caught fire

>Should a microwave be obsolete after 5 years?

Not at all. You can just order a new rack support (or a whole set of them).

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

Quite often this arcing is due to grease or food particles stuck between the holder and the hole it goes into, etc.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

Burnt hole in microwave

Is the hole actually bigger than it originally was or is it just empty because the rack support got burned up & discarded?

The rack supports / rack holders can be ordered. The part number is WB06X10140 (or WB6X10140) and they're less than $5.00 each. You can find them in stock here.

If you install a new rack support in the hole, then any gap or hole around it can allow grease to accumulate, and that can lead to arcing. But you can seal it safely & easily.

Once the support is installed and everything is squeaky clean and dry, you can apply a small amount of silicone caulk into the gap or hole.

Let it dry it overnight with the door open, then use a razor blade or X-acto knife to gently trim away any excess caulk.

That would be a really good fix.

Whirlpool microwavewave hood comination mh3184xp

My Whirlpool MH3184xps is shooting a spark when in use with the rack. When the rack is removed the oven works fine. I am guessing that some of the coating on the rack has cracked and peeled and is exposing some aluminum. Has anyone else had this problem?
