An Ultimate G has lots of suction. If you turn on your vacuum and the bag immediately inflates - that is how you can tell if your Kirby is moving air (suction). There is a more modern brush that came out with the Ultimate G Diamond and the Sentria that has stiffer bristles that dig up pet hair better.
Another way to test the suction is to spread some baking soda onto a hard floor and vacuum it up - you can see how much suction your Ultimate G has, or take off the vacuum head and put on a hose and test the suction at the end of the tube.
Ways to increase your Ultimate G cleaning efficiency. Take off the vacuum head and remove the brush roller. Attach your hose attachment and **** vacuum out the head. Put on a new belt, and remove any hair and or string or threads that may be wrapped around the brush roller. Put the roller back on and on the ends of your roller you will see that the ends spin and have numbers on them. If your vacuum brushroll is original - you could have your bristles rather worn and so you can align the #3 on BOTH sides of the brushroller. This would be a good time to consider upgrading to the Sentria Brush. Remove the bag, and replace with the CLOTH Kirby bag. It has the best filtration and it has the best airflow (which increases what you are referring to as suction). If you want to go the cheap route - at least get the paper Micron Magic with HEPA filtration (but it has slightly less air flow) Remove the side mini emptor from the vacuum and check to see if there is anything clogged up on either the vacuum or the mini-emptor. If your engine is running and inflating the bag and you replace the belt, the brush roller and to the cloth dust bag - your vacuum should pretty much run like a brand new Sentria Vacuum. Your vacuum system is outstanding, but may benefit from a little TLC if you have been neglecting it.
Please see the attached video on how to replace the belt on a Kirby Generation Vacuum Cleaner. This is an easy to follow step by step direction on the proper way to replace the belt, as well as do basic maintenance on your Kirby's roller brush which will prolong the life of your belt greatly if done regularly. http://geeksquad.fixya.com/ThreadView.aspx?prdid=11562&thid=806061 REPLACING BELT KIRBY CLASSIC III Posted by JETALBOT on July 19, 2008 I CAN'T REPLACE THE BELT ON THE CLASSIC III (KIRBY). CAN YOU HELP ME? ELAINE Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. The belt install on a Kirby is to raise the height adjustment to the highest level and then dial the belt off counter clockwise so it is loose and not on the fan pulley, release the top lever on the bell housing, then remove the bottom plate and unhook the brushroll on one side, slide the old belt off and then slide the new one on, replace the brushroll with the screws facing the carpet and re-hook the bottom plate on the Kirby. Then take the bell housing and hook that back on to the Kirby and lock it down. Then dial the belt on clockwise all the way and the belt should be on the fan pulley. The belt should be ready to go, plug in your Kirby and then do the step down on the vacuum height adjustment until the tone changes, then try to see id it picks up, if not go one more height adjustment and that should be the correct setting. http://kirby.com/ Customer Service – U. Generic problem for all Vacuums How do you replace the How do you replace the belt on the Kirby, Model No D50, Serial No. A442867
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. This is an older Kirby vacuum and the front brushroll section of the vacuum and the front brushroll section will come off, 1st you have to remove the front cover (the Kirby Emblem) and under that there is a Kirby spoon or hook and you need to dial off the belt off the belt shaft, once that has been done remove the bottom plate and un-install the Kirby brushroll, check to see if the brushroll spins freely, if it does go onto the next step, if not clean off the hair and thread from either end and then re-check the brushroll, if it still binds up then replace the brushroll and belt with Genuine Kirby belt and brush. Then use the dial to place the belt onto the Kirby spoon / hook. Once the belt is on the hook, install the bottom planter and place then housing of the Kirby on the vacuum and use the lever on the top to secure the fan housing dial the belt onto the pulley and you should be good to go. http://kirby.com Contact Us by Phone United States and Canada 1-800-494-8586 Between the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm EST Monday thru Friday Don – The Vac Man
Kirby salesmen have told many that the new polypropalene bags are reusable, however they from what i can tell are not. sure you can empty them like you could any other bag but filtration is going to be greatly reduced as well as air flow which will greatly reduce cleaning ability as kirbys need air flow to work properly. also reusing these bags could possibly damage machine since it is having to work harder.
