If you email [email protected], they can unlock the phone if it is locked via the RIM relay, otherwise call your carrier, they should be able to supply you with unlock codes.
If your phone is a GSM phone meaning the phone has a SIM card usually T-mobile or At&t, tell your son to call customer service and tell them that he needs the unlock code for his phone, if he has been with the company for more than 90 days they will give it to you with out any hassle, they might ask why you need it, tell them he is traveling over seas, they will email you the unlock code wihin 48 hours, free of charge, when you get your new service provider they will issue you a new SIM card which you will put in the phone once it powers up it will ask you for the unlock code.
There is another way if you dont mind paying a few bucks, check out this link. let me know if this helps
