My HP color laserjet 2550n is configured to print in black as default. Still its using a lot of colored toner. Does it use the color cartridges to make the greyscale?
Re: Still using color toner when printing in black
Check the black toner cartridge. Most printers that use multiple cartridges will use the black cartridge as long as it has toner in it but will then start using the color toner to do the black/grayscale when the black cartridge is empty.

Is the print quality poor on left side for all colors? You may have one bad cartridge. Create a paint document with Yellow, Magenta and Cyan squares on the left side and see if one color prints better than the others. You can also gently shake the cartridges to redistribute toner.
Check your print driver settings. And if you are printing from any of the microsoft office applications look at the page setup to see if something was changed. Click file, then right near print is the page setup.
Black, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow Supplies Status lights
These lights indicate when a print cartridge is low (the light is on), or empty or missing (the
light blinks). The lights also indicate when a non-HP print cartridge is installed (the light
blinks and the Attention light is on).

Are you using generic toners or HP branded? Try to reseat the yellow toner. The page counter can't be reset and should not be. This unit uses chips to recognize the toner level. Generic toners don't always have good chips on them.
Have you checked that you are sending the print job using the correct paper tray on the printer?
Check the properties of the printer to ensure you are. Check also that the printer is OK by running a test print from the printer and not through the PC.
If I remember it's hold the green button for around 7-10 seconds, whilst powering on.
