What type of compaq is your laptop? If it is a HP Pavilion dv2000/dv6000/dv9000 and Compaq Presario v3000/v6000 series Notebook - HP has a limited warranty service. Also the F500 series is included. The wifi has disabled itself on these laptops and hp is aware of the problem. The wlan usually will not come back on after the computer restarted. Also they list some updates and trouble shooting to do prior to giving them a call. You will have to try the trouble shooting before calling them. The hp support will also make you go through some trouble shooting and if that doesn't work they will verify if your laptop series is eligible for the enhanced repair due to the hardware issues that they are aware of. Because of the hardware issue HP has extended the warranty from 12months to 24 months on the above series. Here are the websites:

Connect your modem to the phone line and test the modem.

Control Panel-->>Phones and Modems. Click icon. Tab Modem. Highlight your modem, and Click Properties--->>Diagnostics. Verify that everything is OK.

Then Start --->>All Programs -->>Accessories-->> Comunications ---Hyperterminal.

Enter a name for a bogus connection, Click OK
Enter your phone number and dial it. If Phone/Modem connection is OK, you shoul hear the busy signal.
Alternative:Run the Dell diagnostics.

If Modem connection is correct you must then create a dialup connection.

you need to have software installed in order to send a fax. Go into your start menu and see if you can find fax software that may have been installed.

Check for your model number and go here:

http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html

Type in either your model or product number in the box and choose to download drivers. When it brings you to the next page look for fax software on that page.

If you can't find any fax software to download from that page then you'll have to do a search thru google for free fax software.

Your USB modem possibly came with a cd with the driver and other utilities on it.

When your system asks for the driver:

1. insert the cd
2. point the program to the D:\ drive (assuming that your optical disc is at D:\)

if the USB modem did not come with a CD, then you will have to go to the USB modem manufacturer's web site and download the driver for that model.
