I just recently purchased this firewire/usb card combo. Installation went well, the device manager says it is working properly, & the lastest drivers are installed. Yet, I can't transfer video from my Canon ZR500 camcorder to my hard drive via firewire cable without getting a very choppy video - I assume this is due to dropped frames. I have a pentium4 2.4 ghz with 2 gigs of ram with 14 gigs of hard drive space free - my computer meets the minimum requirements for video capture. No matter what software I use to capture, I get the same result. Is the card faulty? I have defragged the computer, shut down most unnecessary processes, disabled antivirus, disconnected internet, & scaled down desktop resolution, decreased video hardware acceleration yet I see no improvement. What can I do?
Hi,
It sounds like you are using an on-board video card on a HD videos, if it is true, then for you to open those videos you must get external video card (NVIDIA or ATI) the more memory on it the better.
Cheers!
Back when P4 systems were common, the hard drive interfaces were quite marginal for video processing and techniques to force the capture to faster devices (like a RAM drive, or now
SSD drive, or SCSI interface to high end striped drives) were used to smooth the video capture. I have had good luck with SATA3 interface SSD's for capturing video, but continue to use a drive other than the one I boot from so windows doesn't mess up the frame rate.

Hello,
Try searching these posts to see if they will help your problem. Seems this is common. See the link below.

You likely can get a better deal on the internet than BestBuy, and free shipping may be available, and you will pay no sales tax if you purchase out-of state (they will inform you). To find out what the computer requirements of the program you desire to use, try to find the "minimum requirements" which will be somewhere in your installation CD, but really should be on the box it came in. If not on the box, it should be in the instruction manual. A word of warning: "minimal" does not mean "optimal". Optimal means that you will be able to run the program without it being so slow that you want to tear your hair out. Design programs, I would assume, require decent graphics. A good graphics card is cheap in a desktop, but may be pricier in a laptop. However, the rage for great graphics capabilities for kids whose life consists of videogames has provided us with remarkably inexpensive laptops with great graphics capabilities. The prices keep falling: what was 1600 a year ago can now be found for $650. Since you do not require all the glop which comes with Vista, (the product still isn't ready for non-geeks, and requires enormous amounts of memory and a good Dual-core processor, I would highly recommend getting XP as your operating system, or else a Mac, which most graphics freaks prefer. Unfortunately, it's very hard to get a new laptop with XP. SO. What does the program say are its minimal requirements?

Firstly, check that you have latest graphics driver or not.
If not then download the latest driver from www.nvidia.com.
After that remove your old graphics driver and install the latest graphics driver and then install the latest DirectX 9.0c also.
Note : After each and every installtion just restart you machine.
SOURCE: Video transfer
If you're using a Windows Vista Operating System it'snot possible to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer using the USB connection. The videos from the tape camcorders cannot be transferred to Windows Vista Operating System as there is no USB Streaming ooption available on the Windows Vista Operating System. The Camcorder uses the USB Streaming function to transfer the videos to the Computer. You may wish to purchase a i.LINK/Firewire cable to connect the Camcorder to the Computer in order to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer.
or
There is an update for driver on the Sony website to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer using the USB cable.

You may also try installing the driver update for the Camcorder. The i.LINK cable gives a better video transfer qulaity than the USB transfer. The i.LINK cable used to connect the Camcorder to the computer depends on the number of pins available on the i.LINK/FIREWIRE port on the Computer. The i.LINK port on the Computer is a D shaped port which is labelled as i, DV, IEEE1394 and Firewire.
