Direct tv hdbox & Plasma TV & DVD SSound system & DVD recorder

I have a Samsung Series 450 Plasma TV. Direct TV HD receiver, A Samsung HT-TZ512 DVD surround sound system, A Panasonic DMR-ES30v DVD recorder. I can record shows off the TV, Both systems will play DVD's on the TV. If I play a non copyrighted DVD in the Samsung Surround sound system, it will play on the TV, the Panasonic will not record it. Anyway to hook this up correct? I could do it before when I did not have HDTV. I think It all went through the DVD recorder, but now that I have a HDTV receiver I cannot run the cable into the DVD recorder. The HDTV Receiver box has 2 Cables, the DVD recorder only has 1

the direct TV plays on HDMI 1, The samsung Plays on HDMI 2, the dvd recorder plays on AV 1. the DVD records from the TV on AV 1. I hooked the red, white, and yellow from the Samsung to the dvd recorder. the chanel was IN 1, nothing recorded.

Need to make sure you have the red, white, and yellow rca connection cables ran from the samsung dvd player to the red, white, yellow input on the back of the dvd recorder. Once you do that make sure you put your dvd recorder on line 1 input. If you look closely on the back of your recorder it should say line 1 input. If your recorder isn't on that input you can put the recorder on line 1 input by using dvd recorder remote and pushing the input button. Make sure you don't push the tv input button the dvd recorder remote there should be a seperate input button or a way to toggle the inputs on the recorder. Once you verify all that turn on your tv and go to the input on your tv that you watch the dvd recorder on and you should see what your recording on the tv.

How are you hooking up the hd sat box to your panasonic dvd recorder? Also why don't you hook up your dvd recorder with component video instead of a/v cables cause you said your tv is on a/v1 which most of the time that is red, white, yellow plugs on the tv? Component would give you progressive scan which is double the resolution. One other possiblility is that your samsung dvd player might be blocking the red, white, yellow jacks if it is connected to the tv hdmi. Some players will do that because the hdmi connection is copy right protected even though the disc isn't so you might also want to try to run component from the samsung dvd to tv and then red, white, yellow to the dvd recorder. I have had personal experiences with that issue. You also said you can record off tv which makes since because the directv hd boxes do not block the other a/v outputs when connected to the tv hdmi. Anyway this is some ideas and if you are recording off sat try to plug dvd player into same plugs sat worked on as well just to make sure your all your inputs are working on dvd recorder. Good luck!

Smart TV but reveiver does not have HD plug ins

I would input everything directly to the tv via hdmi, then take the optical audio output from the tv back to the receiver.

HI Guys. I just upgraded to DirecTV HD-DVR ( I have aHR24-200) installed which is connected via HDMI to my Samsung HD TV. I have a Samsung HT-C550 Digital Home Theater System which is now directly...

You're correct and that is exactly how I always recommend setup (contrary to what the manuals tell you). It makes no sense to me to run any signal through any electronics or interconnections that neither use it nor improve it. Hence, I have NO SOURCE VIDEO going to or through my receiver and NO high end audio going to my TV (which could just as well be a monitor with NO audio capabilities, right)?

Audio electronics should receive the BEST digital audio directly from it's root source.
The TV should receive the BEST video directly from ITS root source.

THAT is why most all high end A/V gear has separate audio and video in/outputs.

If that means you have to make some switching choices when using different sources, oh well. At least you won't have experience potential degradation from multiple hops or have to troubleshoot problems that could be anywhere in that chain.

Best way to connect new system

After trying several ways, we decided the best picture was to run the blue ray (out) directly to the TV (in) with an HDMI and another HDMI from the sat. box(out) to TV(in), then optical audio from TV (out) to receiver (in). This way you don't have to change channels on the reciever when switching from TV to DVD. Remember that HDMI is one cable that supports audio and video. If you are using all Samsung products and want to use one remote, using the Anynet feature, I think it has to be connected with an HDMI. I'm going to try connecting an HDMI too from the reciever to the TV to see if this feature will work. It does with the Blue Ray.

Digital Optical input on receiver doesn't work

You have set the TV and receiver up to use the optical output? Both should have settings that can switch the sound through the optical on or off.
Set it to Dolby Digital for example!

I am having problems hooking it up to an HD Receiver from Direct TV

playback and record are 2 different things. playback, you connect the DVD player audio-video OUT to the audio-video IN of the TV. recording, you connect the DVD player from the audio-video IN to the audio-video OUT of the source (i.e. cable box, set-top box, etc) hope this helps!
