I HAVE RESTORED MY HP PAVILION BEFORE WITH NO PROBLEM. NOW I AM TRYING TO RESTORE AGAIN AND IT KEEPS COMING UP TO ADD DISK NUMBER 1. ALL OF THE RESTORE SHOULD BE ON DRIVE D: HOW CAN I FIX THIS PROBLEM?
HP laptop also allow you to restore without the help of recovery disk. And guess what you don't have the original disk or don't even have time to buy one.
Your
HP laptop has the restore files loaded onto a hidden drive. With the
press of one button, you will have your HP laptop restored and running
again.
Step 1: First close all the running programs and shut down your HP laptop. Turn it on again.
Step 2:
When your laptop start screen appears, immediately press 'F10' until
the recovery menu appears. Click 'Next' in 'Recovery menu' window.
Step 3:
You will see two options viz. nondestructive recovery or destructive
recovery on the menu. Nondestructive recovery is generally recommended
because it doesn't format your hard drive or erase your data whereas
destructive recovery format your hard drive and erase any other personal
file. So click 'Yes' to select and execute the 'Nondestructive
recovery' procedure here.
Step 4: Now the restore process will start and after that your laptop will restart automatically.
After restarting your HP laptop, you will notice that updates are taking place more frequently.

It is asking for the recovery discs that should have been made in the event there was a problem with the recovery sector on drive D or the hard drive failed. The only option is go to www.hp.com contact customer support and the technical department to see if they can sell you the much needed discs.

You need to run a hard drive diagnostic disk in dos,(before windows starts) First check with HP, You can also use a program called HDD Regenerator 1.51. This will check the drive for bad sectors, and then you can try and repair them. This way you might
be able to see some of the data you want. If the sectors that where
repaired had the operating system on them, you should just get a new drive,(if not under warranty) then after you have a new OS installed on the new drive, you can plug in the old drive and see what you can recover.

Restart and when you see HP logo on boot press F11.
If it's not opening Restore Option screen, you'll need to get restore CDs from HP.
Otherwise, just use any regular XP or Vista CD to format and install OS.

A little late, but I had the same problem. My solution was to restart the comp. and repeatedly press F8 to go to advanced options. Choose "repair my computer". I then skipped the "load drivers" page by pressing cancel and the next screen has an option to "repair a problem that is preventing windows fom starting". After that, the computer fixed itself and started up fine

I don't think the problem is with the motherboard. It's likely that you have a corrupt Windows installation and that reinstalling Windows will fix it. Unfortunately reinstalling Windows will also erase any data you have on your hard drive. Do you have access to another drive that has windows installed already? You could try installing the other drive to rule out a faulty motherboard, but I think it's likely a Windows problem.
