I am hearing impaired. I use the closed caption feature while watching tv. I have the Polaroid DRA-1601a DVD recorder. Does anyone know of a way to get the recorders hard drive to record and show the clsed captioning feature on this unit? Dors tis unit even have such capability?
Very frustrated.

Carl,

I have this machine. It has two modes of displaying the picture. You can play recordings in "progressive scan" mode or "interlaced mode". The broadcast closed captioning is only displayed when using the interlaced mode. If you use the "progressive scan" mode, the captions disappear.

You can switch modes by using the PS/IS button on the remote control.

Carl,
Better late than.. I think that the Polo can record the encoded closed captioning onto the HDD, but you have to have a CC equipped television to display the captioning.
The newer Magnavox and Philips recorders sold at Walmart record the captioning, and have the capability to display it even on sets without the built in CC decoder depending upon your recording settings. If you get a digital converter box and connect that as the source to your Polo, you can record CC displayed on the screen if you want.

How display captions on TV from DVD player?

The captions availability is part of the DVD program that you are watching. If the movie or feature recorded on the DVD disc has got captions then you should be able to select it as part of the DVD setup menu that shows up on screen when you insert the DVD disc in the DVD player.

How do I get closed captioning on a Samsung TV model TXJ2754?

Hello

Your TV displays the closed captions that are broadcast with some

television shows. These captions are usually subtitles for the hearing

impaired or language translations. All VCRs record the closed caption

signal and most pre-recorded commercial video tapes provide closed

captions. Check for the closed caption symbol in your television

schedule and on the tape's packaging: .

1 Press MENU repeatedly until you see the Setup menu. Press CH
to select "Caption."

2 Press VOL+ to open the Closed Caption menu.

3 Press VOL + to turn closed captioning on.

Misspellings and odd characters can occur in captioning. Also, there may be a

captioning delay after changing channels. Neither situation is a TV malfunction.

4 Press CH to highlight "Mode." Press - VOL or VOL + to choose

"Capt." (captions) or "Text." In caption mode, captions appear and

cover a small portion of the picture. In text mode, information unrelated

to the program, such as news reports, are displayed and
often cover a large portion of the screen.

5 If you wish, use CH , CH , or VOL + to change the captioning

channel or field. Then, press DISPLAY to return to normal viewing.

Different channels and fields display different information, such as additional
languages or supplemental information

Polaroid dra-01601a hdd to dvd recording

You will have to split the title and record on more than one DVD. The default speed is SP, that is 2 hours of recording. If you want to record longer programs, go into setup and change the default record speed to one of the other settings, for example: SP+ which is 2 1/2 hours or one of the other longer record settings. This DVD burner will only record at the same speed as you recorded to the hard drive. You can also edit out the commercials by using segment. Go to the title you want, press the right arrow, scroll down and select segment. When you want to start your edit, press enter. when you want to stop the edit, press enter again. You can use your right arrow to skip forward 30 seconds and your left arrow to skip back 10 seconds if you went too far when editing. You will see where your edits are on the screen by the darker color. Do this through the whole program. When you record to DVD, the commercials will not be recorded. Hope this helps you.

Black box on top of screen during HDD playback mode

Problem solved! Thanks Panasonic Tech Support!!

In case anyone else has this problem, I'll tell you what I found out. This model DVD recorder does not have closed captioning functionality at all. So if this happens to yours, it is not the DVD recorder causing the problem. It is a setting on either your TV, cable box, or whatever else you have hooked up to it.

In my case, my daughter must have accidentally hit the "Text" option on our TV's caption menu. I changed that option back to its original setting, and the mysterious black box is gone.
