Usually a lens sensor. Clean with maybe some compressed air. If you trust your skills you could open the unit and clean cabinet where the lens retracts and extends.
Sounds like you have some grit or gum on the lens barrel. This will cause the lens to stick in the partly closed position. Clean the lens barrel and try again. A rag moistened with methylated spirits may be needed. The rag must not be wet as we must not harm the special grease used in the lens. If this fails it probably means an very expensive repair, or replacement.
You need to use the install disk or go to the manufacturers site under "Support" there you'll find all necessary software and drivers available for download.
