Msg. conntected with limited access

Netgear WNR834B router. Cannot connect to the Internet. Worked when used unsecure but gives a msg. where you connect that it is connected with limited access. Called ISP but they could do nothing because my desktop is connected to the net fine.

Thanks for your solution...I have unconnected and reconnected till the cows come home. However, the info that maybe my router does not support WpA or WeP could be it...What do you mean by a full reinstall. Take everything off the desktop and start over?...Duh what does reinstall mean..haha

  • s4syte Nov 23, 2008

Thanks, my problem is fixed. I did not have to uninstall my wireless card but upgrade my card. I had to access the net via a neighbours connection but it worked out in the end. Thanks again.

The "limited access" message is an indicator that Windows has not been able to get an IP address by DHCP, usually an encryption related issue. I would recommend to use WPA, WPA2 encryption setting on your Netgear WNR834B router..

Remove all your wireless networks stored, re-add your own SSID(wireless network), make sure to type the correct encryption.

Try this.

Unplug the Router.
Unplug the modem.
Wait about 15-20 secs.
Reconnect the modem.
wait about a minute or until all the lights are solid on the display.
Reconnect the Router.
Wait about another minute until everything is given time to start up.
Try connecting again.

If it still does that, it may be a problem with your computer that your trying to access with wirelessly.

My mother had that problem on one of her laptops, it turned out that her particular installation didn't support WPA or WEP incryption. I did a full reinstall and now it works.

If you want to avoid a full reinstall you can try uninstalling the wireless network card, then reinstalling it.(Make sure you go to your manufacturers web site first to download the proper driver for your model)

I hope this helps,
Simon.

It's not that your router wouldn't support WPA or WEP, it's that the device your trying to wirelessly (laptop?) connect might not. I set up a new router for my mom and set a password and her laptop wouldn't connect because it had a password. After I did a full reinstall of her operating system it worked. So it may have been a driver problem.

If your on XP, make sure its updated to Service Pack 3.

If your on Vista, make sure its updated to Service Pack 1.

If your system is updated, try downloading the correct wireless adapter driver from your manufacturer.

Once it's downloaded, uninstall the wireless card from the laptop.

(Right-Click "Computer", Click "Manage", Select "Device Manager", double-click "Network Adapters" on the right pane of the "Computer Management" window, Right-Click your wireless adapter, then click "Uninstall")

Once thats done and it has uninstalled the wireless adapter install the driver you downloaded from the manufacturers website.

The in "Control Panel" double-click "Add Hardware" it should then find it and use the driver you just installed.

Hopefully after that it should work,

If it doesn't, let me know and we'll try to go from there.

    Good Luck,

    Simon.

How can you use public access on your desktop and netbook with a netgear router and adapter walmart sales lady said it can be done with just the router and adapter setup everything we needed was in the...

Just having the wireless router without connecting it to cable modem or DSL modem will not allow you to get onto the Internet. The wireless card in your computer/laptop will allow you to get onto the Internet at a free public WiFi hot spot location such as McDonalds, Star Bucks, at the airport.
Also the wireless card in your computer/laptop may allow you to connect into an unsecured wireless router from your neighbors, if their wireless router is within range of your computer/laptop but without their permission to use their Internet, it is considered stealing from your neighbor. They have a set download limit from their Internet Service Provider and by you connecting to their ISP you may cause them to exceed their download limit and they would be charged additional costs for every Mega byte over their limit.

How to turn Netgear WNR834B into a repeater

I don't think the Netgear WNR834B is capable of acting as a repeater but there is another solution. I would decide where I want to put the Netgear WNR834B for best coverage and then do the following. Go buy the Powerline Ethernet Adapters of your choice and put one at the main connection and plug a ethernet cable into a open switch port. Second go to where the repeater is to be located and plug the 2nd Powerline Ethernet Adapters in and connect to the Netgear WNR834B LAN port. Be sure to turn off DHCP on the Netgear WNR834B and assign a IP address that is not used. I normally use the highest address in the last octet so that I can remember for management. xxx.xxx.xxx.254. I hope this helps you.

Netgear unsecured

Log onto the router page by using the IP address in to the browser. To get that Open the Command prompt. To do that . Click start and in the run box type cmd. Or in the start search type cmd and right click and click on run as admin.

Then type ipconfig. Then the default gateway will denote the IP Adress of Router. Put that into the Browser and open the security settings and choose the encryption type and the password.

CAN'T SEEM TO CONECT TO MY WPN824 NETGEAR ROUTER WIRELESSLY WORKS FINE IF I CONNECT STREIGHT INTO THE BACK WITHETHERNET BUT TOTALY GOES IF I DISCONECT IT ?????

For the computer/laptop to connect to the wireless router, the wireless card in the computer/laptop needs to be configured with the netgear's wireless settings eg. SSID and encryption etc.
It is not wise to leave your wireless router unsecured, anyone can access your network and Internet connection and use up your allocated download limit. Once you exceed your download limit you could be slug with addition charges - this depends upon your contract with your ISP.

NEtgear RP614 cannot connect after a electricity shortage in our home :(

Reset the router to factory default. Usually done by unplugging the router hold in the reset button and plug in the router wait 30 sec. release reset button Wait 30 more sec. and unplug router again. Then reset your computer to obtain ip address automatically in network properties. Next shut down your computer, router and modem. First re-power the modem, give it time to boot (about 2 to 3 Min. for Cable and dsl or 7 to 10 min for satellite), next re-power the router, again give it time to acquire it's info (about 2 min.) then start your computer and try to access the Internet, all should be well...

Good luck, and have a great day...

Wnr834b passphrase won't work

Hello jsnow4 & cooler34788,

For vista OS;
Here are some troubleshooting steps that I suggest you try:

1. Go to "Control Panel" ( switch it to classic view )
2. Click " Network & Sharing Center"
3. At the left side of " Network & Sharing Center", click Manage Wireless Connection ( under task)
4. Delete the profiles of your Wireless connections particulary the one you named for your Netgear wireless ( this is also known as SSID).
5. Click close including "network & Sharing Center"

Connecting to a Wireless Network on Windows Vista:

a. Click Start then select Connect To.
b. Connect to a network window will show up.
c. Select your wireless network's name or SSID and click Connect.
Since this is an unsecured wireless, Vista will warn you if you wanna connect anyways. Go ahead and connect.

From the above configuration, please check if you can now access the Internet.
