Whirlpool washer fills up; makes LOUD whine/click metal noise

Top loader direct drive washer filling up with water. Makes a terrible whine/clicking/metal sound and does not agitate. I had to turn on the rinse cycle to get the water out...makes same noise while water empties. No spin cycle either.

I am having a very similar problem, but can't even get the thing to drain. Same washer model. Thanks.

Thanks a lot. This was my first time ever working on a washer and I have to say this was one of the most enjoyable repairs I've made in a while. I'm talking maybe 35 minutes tops. Absolute piece of cake and I've saved a couple hundred bucks during Xmas season which is a bonus. The new coupling is reinforced by metal which will last longer. 19 bucks and when it was in stock I knew I was onto something...the local Maytag/Whirlpool repair shop said these fail all the time. Great site! Will use again and recommend to friends!!!

I have a whirlpool estate top load washer and the agitator spins in only one direction and wraps all the clothes around itself. It makes a loud metallic grinding noise during the wash cycle. Not sure which...

It needs a new gearbox and clutch. It's not really the sort of job you can do yourself. The gearcase is $252, and the clutch is $51. Time for a new Whirlpool front loader. Mine is just as big and uses a tenth of the water and electricity.

My whirlpool thin twin washer wont agitate it just makes loud sound but will fill up with water

Your washer most likely has a broken drive coupling. If broken the washer will fill with water and drain, but the motor spins without driving the transmission (no agitate or spin). The part is common to all whirlpool washers made in the last 20 years and is readily available at all major appliance part stores. It is possible to change this part yourself but much less hassle to get it changed by a pro

USE WPL 285753 (Direct Drive Motor Coupling)Part Number: PS1485646

This coupling kit is used between the motor and the transmission on direct drive washers with no belt. This is the newer version and is made with new metal sleeves for added strength.

Won't start

if it filled proplerly and won't start now, it sounds like the door switch is broken, there could be something wrong with the rest of the electrical systems, however i would suggest the switch first. If there is a lot of noise like its trying to run, then its probably your transmission.

Whirlpool top loader: very loud pumping sounds when filling

You are experiencing surge pressure due to the ATC. It is increasing then reducing the hot water slow to maintain a pre-determined temperature.
I am not aware of a disable or bypass procedure.

Kenmore Series 70 washing machine whines and low flow on cold H2O

Yeah you need to replace the water valve. To get to it you need to remove the cabinet on the newer direct drive models, If yours has a rear access panel then you simply pop the top to get to the valve after removing the hoses. Fairly simple job. Here is a good website for direct drive coupling replacement . It shows you how to open the cabinet. http://repair2000.com/coupling.html
GVI 151 is the generic part that fix all belt drive models. Direct drive will need its own little water valve buy hay it ain't but 20 bucks.
For a better explanation post you model number in the comment box and I will research it further for you amigo.

Grinding noise when it goes to agitate or spin.

gramps Most likely the problem with your washer is worn out motor drive coupling. You can buy it here: http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=SrmyP8LkIos&offerid=92089.547094027&type=10&subid= If you need help to replace it, let me know. Gendos...post back

Will not agitate or spin, makes loud noise during those cycles

Sounds like coupling gears between transmission and motor... they did away with the belt and went direct drive with coupling gears. It can pump water out but nothing else. water pump is mounted to front of motor is why it will pump water out.
