Go into the BIOS setting - Boor/startup order and move the USB to the first boot device. If your Boot/startup does not have the USB listed then you cannot boot up with an USB device.

Yes you can use a usb external cd/dvd-rom to any operating system as long as the bios allows you to, most bios's have the capability.
When the external usb drive has been connected power up the mechine, in post it should tell what to press to enter your boot menu without entering your bios and choose usb drive to boot.
Okay, sounds like your BIOS upgrade went south. First off, re-install the original BIOS. Usually you back up the original before upgrading. Either that, or d/l the original BIOS from emachines.com. Once you've got the BIOS working, try starting the system. I'll need to know more to help you from there.
Good to hear from some one who is in my Neighbor country India.
well as i know Its not possible to Install any of windows OS on external HDD. Microsoft Dont allow it, becz they wont be able to make extra money if they give this option.....
But there is a option in my mind; like if External HDD have image of internal drive and computer has option of booting from USB; then it may get loaded,.... Hvn't tried this thing personally...
the hard drive registered in the standard cmos utility is the only one that could be registered for boot in advanced cmos setup and no other, if your usb hard drive and pen drive could be registered in the advanced cmos setup - where boot options are registered, surely it will boot your pc.
