TomTom One XL battery not holding charge

Hi there

I have had my TomTom for about 8 months and have always found that the battery does not last long, it has now got to the stage that you can charge it fully and turn it off overnight and it is dead in the morning. Is this a common problem? What can I do about it and if the battery needs replacing would this be covered by the warranty?

Regards

Theresa Smith

I have the same problem with my TomTom XL 330S. I put it in the car and somehow it turned itself on twice already. I'm taking it in the house to monitor it this time. The battery doesn't hold its charge for some reasons.

Fully charged tomtom One XL discharges to Min within 26-29 hours while off.  Bluetooth is turned off, and power settings are adjusted to minimum settings.  In the processing of contacting TomTom now.

Hi Theresa,

Yes , it should be covered by warranty. It's not a common problem but sometimes batteries do fail. It's a bit like when a light bulb goes in your house , you can get a brand new one out of the cupboard , plug it in and it either goes right away or only lasts a short while. Where thats the case the bulb was in fact defective and not fit for purpose. Same with your Tomtom battery . Good luck when you contact TomTom.

If you need a new battery and want to replace it yourself, you can purchase one from NewPower99.com - it comes with video instructions and tools so I found it was not too hard to do. Here is a link -

WHY isn't MY TOMTOM CHARGING? It's BEEN PLUGged IN FOR 45 MINS.

Usually an old (or older) battery will no longer hold a charge ... or will only hold a small charge (that will let you run the GPS for only a few minutes).
Often, when the TomTom device is always connected to the charger (in a vehicle), where it charges every time the car is turned on, whether the TomTom is being used or not, the battery gets charged (partially or fully) often enough to use up the "maximum number of charge" cycles for the battery. Hence, it will no longer charge properly or hold a strong charge.
Like for all lithium batteries, it's better if your device is not always connected and being charged (whether you are or are not using it). The battery will last longer and it will still be able to hold a stronger charge.

I have a tomtom xl 330. the device will not start up. I tried to update the application. it still does not work. Please help.

A likely cause is that the battery is "dead" ... i.e. no longer holds a charge. The GPS runs on battery power, even if it is plugged in. It will work even if the battery holds a (small) charge. But if the battery doesn't a charge anymore, the device will not start up, even when it is plugged into a power source.

If this is the case, you'll want to change the battery.

My Tom Tom XL 325 wont hold a charge while left off

Hi, leaving the unit in the cradle exposed to the sun during hot days has been known to fry the battery causing loss of battery capacity. perhaps this could be your problem. I replaced the battery in my last GPS 4 times because of this before I analysed the problem. This will most likely be outlined in your user manual too. You might also compare the output capabilities between your blackberry and tomtom charger - it is entirely possible that you are starving the unit of a decent charge if the blackberry charger is not to the same current capacity as the tomtom charger.

Green light on but will not switch on

plug in your xl via the usb cable to your computer and let it charge a few hours, then press and hold the power button for up to 15 seconds.

do not use the car or home charger to intially charge your xl. they are to maintain the battery, not a rapid charge.

let me know if you need further help.

I have not used my tomtom for a few months , an when attempting to use it today , it was dead . nothing at all help tomtom xl [email protected]

connect it to a power supply and leave it for a few hours A battery that is totally depleted will take some time to recover and not show that it is even being charged as power is too low to light the LED.

It will require a full charge of about 10 hours to get it fully back into service. But the LED will ( or should turn on) after about 1-2 hrs depending on the condition of the battery. If after the charge the battery does not hold a charge lasting on average about 2 hrs , then change the battery.

You Can charge your Tomtom when you drive, or you can charge it with a USB port on your computer.

Charging tomtom XL GPS

Hi Jill,

It all depends on your computer. The charging current via USB is limited by the computer. Some restrict this to 500mA, others (lap-tops mainly) to 200mA. If the TomTom is turned off, you should get the battery charged in 3 to 6 hours. With the unit on, it can take many times longer as the unit will take almost 200mA from the battery.
