Troy-bilt self-propelled won't engage drive

My troybilt mower m/n#12AV556071 won't engage the self-propel. I took apart the section at the handle and that was fine, but when I took off the cover over the front axle I found the cable was detached and fraying. I think I need a new cable, but once I get it I don't know where it suppose to attach. There is a plate that it is attached to and a small hole, but I'm unsure as to how it is suppose to go. Thanks for any help.

I checked the drive-belt and it looks to be fine. I just don't know where to attach the cable.

Make sure the drive belt that turns the wheels is in good working order as well. It may have detached.

Husband says thinks it is starter cable has stretched and needs new one...does this sound correct and how to install it on Troybilt self-propelled push mower?

I'd love to help you, but I think you need to rephrase your question. There is no "Starter Cable" on this mower. Sorry.

Self propell will not go

Remove the cover from the self propel and check the engagement cable for excessive stretch.

Also check the drive belt for wear or breakage.

I have a troybilt xp, and the self propel fontion

Does the drive shaft going to the wheels turn at all?

If it doesnt you may have a unsecured pulley on the engine.

If the shaft does turn when you engage the tranny your next stop is taking the wheels off and checking the wheel clutches. Sometimes called sprag clutches. They are probably both stuck in the unlocked position. You need to clean them up by removing all the greasy material covering them and putting them back together with just a few drops of light oil.

I hope this helps. Good luck and be careful!
