My phone came "pre-loaded" with many apps I would not use and I would like to delete them. How can this be done. It has become more important now as I have attempted to update apps I do want and the phone says I have run out of room. I would think deleting the apps I do not want would help this situation but if I can not delete the apps I do not want, what can be done to add additional memory?

Since you tested with a service representative from the wireless company side by side we will pass the topic of cellular signal.
The apps on the phone are going to take up two things:
1.) Ram- the memory that allows you to do multiple things quickly
2.) network access- your data transmission to cell phone towers or wifi
The EVO has an android operating system (froyo 2.2) and has quite a nifty app market. I personally recommend finding a high rated task killer and installing it. This app will help to terminate other applications every thirty minutes that may be taking up both RAM and cellular data.
Second step:
Connect to a wifi network and see if you still have the issue.
Third Step:
It doesn't really matter how many apps you have installed as long as they are not all running and using system memories at the same time. Check to see which apps are using the most system resources under system -> applications-> running. If you don't need the 3rd party apps that are using the most system resources, uninstall them and run the task killer.
SOURCE: slow, and internal memory almost full
The reason your phone is running so slowly is because the memory is almost full. Electronic devices like computers and phones need some space on their internal memory to perform basic functions with. When they don't have enough space, everything slows down.
The HTC Hero doesn't come with very much storage space (512MB) by default, but it can be expanded by adding a MicroSD card. To solve your problem, try following these steps:
This should fix your problems.

Go to settings to applications to manage applications tap application tap move to SD card
