Mounting failed I have a new hard drive in my G4.  I am getting a "mounting failed" message when trying to download several programs that I have used easily on my old drive -- Skype and VLC video driver are two of them.  I notice that a "Tuk Tuk" user had the same problem with skype on 9/28 (2 months ago) with no solution posted.  Any suggestions?  I really need to get this up before Friday.  Thanks in advance.

Check that your Mac HD is not full, and that the software you are downloading is for the same Mac OS version.

Assuming your OS is 10.3.9 or superior, of course, since Skype does not work on 10.2.x.

The "Mounting Failed" error is usually called by an incomplete DMG file i.e. the file stopped dopwnloading before it was complete.
n any case your best bet is to re-download the file and try again.

Unfortunately, Skype will not run on a G3. From the Mac download page:

System requirements
* Mac computer with G4 800 Mhz processor or faster.
* Mac OS X v10.3.9 Panther or later.
* For higher-resolution video a faster processor (Core 2 Duo) and a broadband connection with at least 384kbps upload speeds.
* 512 MB RAM.
* 40 MB free disk space on your hard drive.
* Microphone and speakers or headset.
* Download drivers for your webcam.
* Internet connection (broadband is best, GPRS is not supported for voice calls, and results may vary on a satellite connection).

What is the OS of your computer? If you are using Windows Vista, you need to disable the "User Account Control" on your computer when you are installing VLC or Skype.

Your hard drive may have failed.
I suggest you remove your hard drive and re-connect it to your laptop to make sure it is make proper connection. Boot up and go into the BIOS to see if the hard disk is detected.
If the hard disk is not detected then most likely the hard disk has failed.
To get your laptop working, you will need to purchase a new hard disk and install Windows on the new hard disk plus the Pavilion device drivers and your programs,
You can download the device drivers from the Compaq/HP WEBsupport/download page. Make sure you select your model laptop and the XP orVista Windows version of the drivers you require and install them. Click onthis link to download the drivers: -

When i stert my g4 imac,s screen was became blue

try these articles:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1411 also boot to cd and run disk first aid. If it can repair the you have 3 options 1: try 3rd part utility program such as disk warrior or drive genius. 2: try to back up.. you can use target disk mode and hopefully you hard drive will mount, if you dont know how to do target disk mode do a search. if not drive saver can save data but it's expensive 3: erase and install

External hard drive

500Gb Lacie D2 Quadra with the same problem of flashing led and not mounting on the desktop (Mac G4 Mirror), traced to the power supply (57w) going down on power, both 12v and 5v supplies are available but the main power to run the drive drops to below an adequate output, hence the clicking and whirring evident from the drive with simultaneous flashing led.

Testing with another Lacie power supply (250Gb D2) this time a 34w unit got the drive up and running, however, and this is the reason for this post, this lower power PSU failed a week later whilst waiting for a warranty replacement from Lacie (5 weeks and still waiting for the new PSU from them. they have no stock)

Message for all Lacie D2 users, check the power supplies first, test with another Lacie PSU, do not run the drive on a lower rating (34w) PSU it will fry it and leave you with another failed power supply.

If you are in a tight spot use the temporary power supply to move your data to another drive and get the correct 57w power supply before running the drive again.

Don't do as I did assume any Lacie power supply will run any Lacie hard drive, they won't, fortunately I had a second back up, but am 2 drives down and no new PSU's available to buy anywhere.

Try and purchase another spare 57w power supply, something all D2 users should do for long term security, as these do not seem to be very reliable and getting warranty support from Lacie on these is currently impossible.

The lack of 57w power supplies from Lacie and its distributors across the world is surely a warning to be noted!!!!!!

Buyers beware!

Freezing is a HD problem. Do you hear clicking sometimes? Sometimes on boot up is there a foler with a questionmark in it? I would get your hard drive looked at, this is the reason disc utility fails. Your hard drive has a hiccup.

Lacie drive won't mount

I solved the problem. It was a power supply problem. It seems after searching boards on the net, this is a common problem with the lacie hard drives. Just replace the power if your hard drive is clicking and not mounting. I think many people must be throwing the drives away thinking they are lost when it is just the power supply. Try this first before trashing it or spending a lot of money on data recovery programs/

Format Hard Drive Error

If the unit detects any form of Hard Drive Error it asks you to format the drive. Connect the unit to your PC and run ScanDisk or DOS Chkdsk on the drive. Will help to rectify any issues with the FAT. Windows XP & 2000 Running Check Disk Utility (ChkDsk) ? HARD DRIVE mode only If you still have problems with the file system on your AV 500 you can try to fix it using the DOS utility, check disk (chkdsk). Do the following; ? Make sure external AC adapter is powering the AV 500. ? Quit all running applications. ? Properly connect the AV 500 to your computer ? Wait patiently (up to 5 minutes) for Windows XP to show the local drive as mounted. ? Open a DOS window. Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. ? At the prompt, type chkdsk e: /f . Use e: or f: or whatever drive letter is representing your AV 500. The /f argument tells the program to automatically fix errors. ? Be patient, this may take a while. ? When finished, exit the DOS Window and properly disconnect the AV 500 from your computer. Now try using the device. DO NOT try to defrag the drive. Let us know how you get on.

External Firewire drive won't mount any more

This model appears to have a high failure rate in consumer reviews, so it may have physical damage on the disk. Only a re-format of the drive will isolate bad sectors that won't hold data. Try re-mounting your drive after a fresh re-boot of your computer. If the drive came with the manufacture's software to allow it to communicate with your computer, then try removing this software from your system and re-installing it again. This will repair a corrupt driver or I/O program. Try using the drive with a new or different firewire cable. Other users have reported this drive working again after replacing the cable. If you use Mac OS 10.2, you might not be able to initialize or partition the hard drive. This may require you to partition and format the drive on a different computer. From your brief description, it sounds as though you may need to re-format the drive before it will work again.
