Poor receive with my Connex 3300 HP radio

I have installed new coax, I have tried grounding my antenna mount, I have tried a Wilson 2000 antenna, I have tried a Wilson 4ft fiberglass antenna, I have tried a Frances antenna. I have had the radio check by two different CB Shops. This is a true alligator radio, all mouth and no ears. Can you please help me?

I also have a Connex 3300 hp.It's been tested at a cb shop and it works fine.I've tried new antena and mount, coax, microphone. It will talk but, not receive hardly at all. It's mounted on a over the door post on a Volvo. Had shop check the hot, ground post already.

    Any ideas?

What kind of vehicle are you installing the connex in? If it is a big truck, and you are installing it on the mirror mount, there is a chance that the mirror mount may be grounded to the door, but the door is not grounded to the rest of the vehicle, which will still stop you from having a good ground plane. Have you tried a known good radio with the antenna set up to determine if it is the raidio or the antenna setup?

I have the 3300 hp radio and would like to know how to access the inside for installing a new echo and a peat repeat PP1 recorder.

you should have saved your money and bought a noise toy instead. they just plug into the back of the radio and your coax from the antenna plugs to it.

What's the best antenna to run? With a 3300 connex

The difference wont be very noticeable. The 2000 or 1000 will do nicely. The specs on gain and field strength are not posted but if you are not using a linear, you dont need the 5000

Uh400sx shows on screen as every channel busy

Busy can indicate a incoming signal or your receiver sensitiviity to rf which could be a poorly shielded coaxial cable.
Check antenna and coax connections for moisture, or corrosion. This could be a poor ground issue at antenna mount or bad coax or antenna.
If this is a magnetic mount antenna i am not surprised they are a waste of time but if you must the Wilson Little Wil would be the choice.

I have a wilson 5000 mirror mount. I mount it on the drivers side mirror on the upper cross arm that goes to the mirror. It is mounted on this arm with a bracket and a so 239 connector so I can undo it if I have to ,leaving the antenna connected.I can change coax and not have to worry about undoing the antenna. Remember one thing. The antenna has to be checked for SWR.each time you move it to a different spot or to a different truck.

My radio receives the wx stations fine, it transmits fine but it will not receive when switched to cb, I have tryed ex speaker, still nothing. mete wont move in receive mode, but when keyed the tx is over...

Here is the list just scratching the surface.
  • Bad antenna
  • Bad coax cable ......grounding externally or internally with shield.
  • Bad/poor ground for antenna..........door to body, painted parts when mounted elsewhere.
  • Antenna installed incorrectly. Nylon grommet must insulate antenna from contact with mounting bracket. Coaxial connector must have contact with bracket for grounding.

Having trouble setting swr .moved anttena up and down 1/4 inch at a time and there is no change

There are several things that can cause you not to be able to get an acceptable SWR.

The first is the most obvious. Poor antenna, or bad coax. Make sure your coax is good. Make sure the antenna is mounted in a good location.

Some things I have seen that cause this problem.

  • Wilson Little wil, almost impossible to get under a 1.6 SWR.
  • Fiberglass antenna's, a break in the wire near the top of the antenna. Will show the antenna as being too short, and adjusting the top will do nothing. This antenna is no good.
  • Common mode current. This is when the RF is traveling back down the outside of the coax, and or causes the coax to act like part of the antenna. SOLUTION. As close to the antenna as you can, take 6 to 8 inches of coax, and coil it into a tight coil, about the diameter of a spray paint can. In fact using a spray can to wrap the coax around works well. Use electrical tape to secure the coil so that it will stay tight and uniform. This will stop common mode.
  • missing foil/vinyl membrane on bottom of magmount antenna. This is essential for the antenna to see ground plane.
  • bad connections on coax connector.
  • Cracked isolator on stud mount.
  • incorrect procedure for taking SWR reading.
  • Poor location of antenna. E.g. antenna's load not above roof of vehicle.
  • Incorrect length whip being used.
  • corrosion of any part of the antenna system.
There are some cheap antenna's out there that you just can't get lower then say a 1.5 or worse, like the wilson little wil. Wilson makes great antenna's. The 500, 1000 and 5000, as well as their silver load antenna's are excellent. I have been able to get them all to at least a 1.1 SWR, and some like the 5000, and silver load fiberglass whip to 1.0 using an analyzer. The Little will is just a poor antenna. Anything under 2.0 SWR is okay of a barefoot radio, although I don't like going over 1.5 my self. A barefoot radio, will do a 2 swr all day. If the radio is stock, and not peaked and tuned, 2 swr is fine and won't hurt the radio.

You should always try to get the lowest SWR that you can in any case. The lower the SWR, the more RF energy is leaving the antenna. As well, receive will improve the closer you get to a perfect match. This is known as being "On Que".

Check everything I have listed that applies. And if nothing fixes it, you may want to try a different antenna. Some antenna's just don't work well on certain vehicles.

Feed back thru external speaker, very bad

Have your antenna checked at a place that knows what they're doing. If your antenna system is bad, ground problem, coax bad mount or maybe just a wrong or bad antenna. Then the sounds not getting out the antenna and its feeding back thur the radio. If your echo board was bad then your radio wouldn't transmitt at all.
If you unplug your external speaker will it squeal? If not do the antenna and if that reads fine just try a better speaker like a uniden 20watt speaker.I own a CB shop and this is easy to fix.

Cb radio

As for me ,the Wilson 1000 or Wilson 2000 are the best mobile antenna for a mobile. I have out talked a lot of base antennas with them, just put it on the top of car in the center or trunk, or middle of cab of truck, with a good SWR and you are talking and receiving. great antenna. ...hope this helps..

White boy here, i'm installing a connex 4600tinto my 4runner and need to know how big of a power wire to use and proper way to put my wilson 5000 in ground wire ect. thx

you can use 8 gauge wire, this is only 190 watt radio, do put a fuse in line close to the battery. Wilson 5000.....wher are you going to mount this..I'm guessing that this is the trucker series antenna. You do know that the load has to be at the top of the roof? Again how and where are you mounting the antenna?

It's probably a bad ground connection at the antenna. The coax shield needs to have a good ground (ground plane) or else you'll have RF feedback through the mic cable due to excessive RF traveling back down the outside of the coax and making the radio "hot".
