Got the tv set from friend, he had replaced the bulb and said that the there was a short in the wire and thus there was not picture coming out. I took it home and opened it to clean some dust off, closed it and turned it on and it was working fine! but after using it daily when first turnining the tv on the screen would light up like normal and the audio from that channel would play and there would be some black bars located on the bottom third of the screen. I t would stay like that for 3 or 4 minutes then the picture would dissappear and the tv would start to operate with no problems.
Good picture. You have a board going out inside your light engine. Unfortunatly it cannot be replaced. However you can contact Toshiba. They will mail you a box that you can put your light engine in and ship it back to them. They will fix it and ship it back to you. This will cost a few hundred dollars though.
thank you! do you think if i choose not to fix it the tv will just give out eventually? and is it a possibility that i could just buy a light engine online and just replace it? and if so is it hard to replace a light engine? and again thank you alot.
Doubt that you can find one on line. These have always been ship and return. You could find one on e bay, but you risk getting junk. To answer your question, your set will get worse. Light engines are not very hard to replace, but you do need to take your time and have patience.

theres a high voltage block that all three of the anode leads attach to and sometimes a small crack happens across this block and will not let some or all of the crt's get the high voltage all at once untill it heats up a bit. now if this is not your problem i would make sure that all three crt sockets are attached to there tubes all the way as maybe justy maybe there loose and will only work after ther expand a bit. Now another problem that could cause this problem to occor origially would be that someone left off a crt ground strap and the crt arched and popped and caused the problem with the High voltage block. And no I cant see a tube being bad then comming on at first UNLESS when you say the red comes on is the picture all red with small retrace lines(small white lines)in the screen with no picture except for red???? No video only a red blank screen is what i mean. If thats what its doing then yes Ive seen heater to cathode shorts on a picture tube that would cause this problem but to be sure your really gonna need to have the set looked at.. Good Luck
SOURCE: color gets blotchy, then goes screen goes black
The issue is with the color wheel but you have to replace the engine inorder to get one. The cost would exceed the value.
SOURCE: no picture- red light is on steady(not flashing like other posts)
Your good description of events is helpful and points to the power supply as the culprit.
This is probably on a separate board (they are often out-sourced) and may be easy to replace.
You should be able to identify the board since it will be smaller than the main board and have larger components on it including one or more transformers and larger capacitors (plastic shrink-wrapped cans of different sizes).
If you want some confidence before rushing out to buy one or have this one repaired, you could pick up a can of 'freeze spray' from any electronics supplier (Radio Shack may have it too), pull your set from the wall, loosen the screws on the access panel behind (don't remove it; that may improve cooling and mask the failure), keep the freeze spray handy so if it fails, you can pull the panel and start spraying the PS board.
I'd start with the small to medium sized capacitors since these are often at fault once aged.
Good luck-
SOURCE: Toshiba tv screen goes black every 5 minutes with sound still on
Is it ok when you watch regular TV thru the cable or sat?
SOURCE: I have a Toshibal 50HM66 DLP TV. I purchased it
I have had the same problem and after several trips to the shop I realised it was caused by humidity. The shop was air conditioned so the problem never happens there. A dehumidifier or air conditioner "solved" the problem.

when i would turn on the tv the first few days it would turn on just fine, but then after three days or so it started showing that image, it looks like black horizontal bars on the bottom of the screen. if you can i magine something that looks like a barcode on the bottom portion of the screen. The lamp is working fine as the tv lights up like normal but the screen just doesnt produce an image for a while until all of a sudden the blank screen with the bars goes away and the tv functions normally.
