I can't load the tape into my Sony camcorder. The mechanism will close when empty, but if I put a tape in, it will only partially load, and it then jams. I then have to power down the unit to get the partially loaded tape to eject. I fear someone in the family may have tried to force the mechanism closed (right where is says "Do Not Push") and now something is mechanically misaligned.
Any advice on this would be appreciated.
Thanks

Was having a similar problem but the tape would not even partially load. Spent several hours, over the course of several days trying to figure how to fix this and found the following solution to a similar problem on this site. I tried it as a last resort...it worked! Now I just need to figure out what to tell my wife when she asks me "how" I fixed the camera????
Here is what I did...I allowed the mechanism to close without a tape inserted (the only way it WOULD close), gave it a solid - but gentle - whack on the tape side of the camcorder with the palm of my hand...sort of like burping a baby. I said a little prayer to the saint of hopeless causes (St. Jude Thaddeus)...slid the open/eject button, opened the door, slid a tape in, gently pushed it down (where it says "push") and ...the mechanism closed!!!
Not sure if the "fix" will last but we'll see and report back if the problem crops up again.
I had the exact same problem as described here on a Sony DCR42E. After much searching I found the fix from a link on another FIXYA thread. The fix is to give the give the side of the camcorder a few slaps. I hit outside of the tape loader (tape loader door closed) three firm slaps with an open hand, using the inside of my finders. Firm but not hard enough to break anything. Opened the loader and the tape loaded perfectly again. From what I could see from the thread this seems to be a common enough problem. I can't remember if it just affected sony camcorders. If you find the original link there are plenty of posts that state that the slap fixed the issue for them.
Don't listen to all these techs lol. There is a really really easy solution. It's called the fonzie tap. I had the exact same problem, my camcorder (zr400) wouldn't accept my tape but it would close with out it. So heres the solution:
With the camcorder closed tap the side quite hard then try inserting the tape again. Repeat this action until it accepts the tape. I swear on my mothers grave this actually works! I almost shat my pants when it fixed it hahaha. I hope this helps alot of people.
Had somewhat similar problem. After pushing tape in, it wouldn't go down and there was a loud whrring noise then the tape would eject.I noticed the tape was not inserted square at the top of the mechanism but down on the forward side about 1/16". I pulled the right side up even with the left and the tape functioned normally. It must have straightened "something" because I ejected and replaced the tape several times without taking care to align it and it then worked fine.
Check for bent frame where the tape goes in - it's very delicate and easy to bend back into place if it's warped. If there's no obvious damage, check with some of the independent shops on the Fixya home page. Our general repair charge is $85 + parts.
The alignment of the super slim mechanism parts might have got damaged. The whole mechanism has to be replaced.
We can offer mechanism and Service manuals and you will need a service center to do the job.

Hi, My Sony DCR-HC32 handycam's tape mechanism is giving me some problem. It ejects and the tape deck opens up properly but after putting a tape and closing it, the tape deck does not go in. I tried with or without tape but it doesn't go in. It is still open. Can you please suggest how it could be fixed? Thanks, Pramod
I have a sony cam myself. If the cam is empty, you open the outer door(swings out), and the load/unload mechanism rises up and pops open allowing tape insertion. When a cassette is placed into the mechanism, you press where it says "push" and then the drive pulls the tape down and into the unit. Then the outer door is closed and you're ready to tape. IF YOU PUSH DOWN ON THE TAPE WHILE IT'S BEING PULLED INTO THE UNIT IT WILL STRIP GEARS INSIDE. The gears are made of nylon to prevent serious damage to motors and other circuitry. This transport setup cannot be forced at all. If any type of mis-alignment occurs, the mechanism is supposed to stop and back up--allowing the problem to be corrected. If it is damaged, the cam must be repaired. There is critical timing involved in replacing the tape carriage.---Rick
HI, this is a mechanism fault beep you are hearing. the mechanism and load motor is damaged. you will need to send this unit to the Handy cam repair depot for this repair. you will need a new load motor and loading dock mechanism as well.
I had a similar issue where the tape bay would not lock in and engage the motor mechanism to load the tape. I removed the battery from the unit and let it stand for approximately a minute then reinserted the battery. The tape drawer closed first without a tape then reopened with no issue. I then inserted a new tape with no issue. I guess it needed a hard reboot.
Hi See if this works--If you are on battery there may not be enough power .Charge the battery or use the the mains power through the transformer and see if it works. Hope this helps Jay
I had the same Problem. My Solution was i open the camera, then i take the batery away. I put the tape into and close the camera, then i put the battery into and the camera close with the tape
Defective mechanism, a stucked mechanism is present. camcorder are smart it can detects error and shuts down itself for safety. earlier models dominoes the defect if the user is not quick enough to react when something goes wrong with the camera. You need professional service to fix it.
I'm having a similar problem. The camera is a Sony
DCR-TRV280.
When you put a tape in the tray will not go down. However when the tray is empty and you push it shut it will go down.
In other words the mechanism works fine without the tape but with the tape it doesn't.
I hope the explanation is clear enough.
Thanks
