Here's a crazy one. My propane direct vent wall heater with no blower will accept a light of the pilot light through a removable little window. It then fully ignites and heats. As soon as I replace the little window through which I light the pilot, the flames die. I cannot find any blockage in the exhaust/air inlet. It'll burn beautifully with the window out, but goes out within a minute once the window is covered. Thanks for the help. JMac
John Mac here...the solution was that we had shut the pilot off for the summer, and birds had made a nest inside the heat exchanger...coming in through the direct vent. Cleaned out the nest, and it works perfectly. My technician recommends that I leave the pilot buring through the summer to prevent this in the future.
You have a crack in your heat exchanger and it is sucking in products of combustion. Replace the heater. OR there is a blockage in the intake or exhaust vent. GET IT FIXED OR REPLACED!
