My fan went out and laptop went down

You are going to have to use the restore/recovery process to get past this. The virus corrupted a major file and now it wont boot. I hope you made backups.

Sounds like a problem with your hard drive. The original hard drive installed is 40Gb. The message "destination: \\harddisk0\partition2" indicates that your single HD has been set to 2 partitions. Chances are that the recovery files are saved in your 2nd partition D. If your laptop came with a recovery CD, try using that instead of the eRecovery ALT/F10. Alternately, you may want to use an OEM XP Home Edition Installer and choose the 2nd "Repair" option.

If things don't work out, you may need to re-partition the HD and reinstall fresh/clean. Of course this would erase any and all contents of the drive. Should there be important files, you need to back them up but that would mean removing the HD and using an external enclosure, connect it as a removable storage to a 2nd PC using the USB and proceed to copy all your important files assuming of course that the 2nd PC will be able to read the HD in question.

If even on the 2nd PC you are having difficulty accessing the laptop's HD, try running utilities (ScanDisk) to check the HD's integrity. Possible problems are bad sectors, missing partition, corrupt files and the likes. If there are bad sectors, you may need to purchase a replacement.

HDD is damage.. however sometime cause by memory failure. try to clean memoryand insert it back. if not hdd is damage. you need software to recover your files.

Seems like your hard drive is gone.

When you dropped it you will have caused the Hard drive arm to contact the surface of the hard drive, damaging it.
Unfortunatly, it looks like it damaged the Boot files, Its worth a try with the recovery disc, you may need a new hard drive if it fails with the recovery disc

My 0xc000000c problem seemed to result from disk surface damage on the restore DVD. I burned a new copy of the restore DVD and the restore then proceeded normally.

Using a DVD copy program that provides an aggressive read method to extract data from damaged disks might help you the most.

I presume that recovery disc is for that computer... in that case check that the disc is spotlessly clean and also if i remember right that is a two disc set so make sure you are putting disc one in first

At this point, you can try to clean your disk # 4 and see what happen,
or try to make a copy of disk # 4 (if you can copy the disk) and try again.

or

1) Contact your customer support and ask for a new set of disks.(or only # 4)

or

2) Boot your computer with another OS disk (win XP)

or

3) Boot your computer with some utility disk

Do recovery again, when it asks you to insert disc 2, take out disc one and close the tray. Do not put the disc 2 yet. If you can see the error message again, then it is a RAM issue. You need to reseat the Memory module and try to do the recovery again.

If you closed the tray then no error message came up, it would be an issue with your recovery disc and order for a new one. You can contact Toshiba to have the recovery replaced due to corrupt media.

What do you mean by 'uninstalled XP'??

You cant uninstall it unless you format the drive, in which case the recovery discs are now probably useless as they rely on a folder on the HDD called i386.

Recovery discs normally dont have the OS on them, they rely on the I386 folder to gather info about the computer and then restores it to the state when it was new.

If you can acess the system, reboot and go into the bios and change the boot sequence to CD, then insert the first recovery disc. then save the settings and the computer will reboot and start the recovery process again, this should clear up the error.

If it does not it will be because the i386 folder is missing in which case you can either explore the recovery discs for it or you will have to buy a copy of Windows XP.
