Oil leaking out from under freezer side.

I wrote last week saying my refrigerator was making a humming noise. It seemed as though the auto-defrost was not working. After unplugging the refrigerator for a period of time it seemed the the freezer had defrosted and then it worked perfectly for a week. The humming has started up again and now there is oil leaking out from under the freezer.

That oil is probably compressor oil. If the compressor leaks, you need a new fridge. Sometimes they only leak when they're charged up. That would explain the other symptoms.

SOURCE: Refrigerator

Have looked at the schematics for this cabinet and am unsure as to the location of both defrost thermostats as unclear on drawings. The purpose of the defrost thermostat is to overide the heater and end the defrost cycle, once the temperature on the evaporator is high enough (normally around 0'C). If you have two then one will probably control the heaters going off and the other may well control the fan, for coming back on. I.E. once the defrost has ended the second sensor will tell the fan when the coil is cold enough to come on, this prevents heat being pushed into the main area after a defrost cycle. If you feel competent enough then I would bypass the heater thermostat temporarily and see if the heaters kick in. The other thing to check is that you have a resistance across the two ends of the defrost heater. In my experience the heater is the most likely to fail, the sensor sometimes fail and the timers rarely fail. The age of your cabinet would suggest the heaters. Please do not leave the sensor bypassed as it performs an essential role. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Freezer/refrigerator compressor running constantly

th ebi-metal is a thermostat which shuts the defrost heater on/off, but doesnt actually put the unit into defrost. if it were bad the defrost heater would never go on resulting in massive build up of ice on back wall of freezer, and noticable refrigeration sect. cooling.. dont know how you know the compressor never shuts down, but if that the case perhaps you have a sealed system/ freon issue. try removing the back panel of freezer section and check the evaporator coil. you shuld have an even frost pattern over the entire evap coil. if theres just frost over the top 1or 2 coils, and the rest of coil is shiny aluminum , thats an indication of a sealed system issue.( 5 year part warr by manufacture) def not a do it yourself issue...but that would,, depending on extent of restriction/loss of freon,, cause freezer to freeze and defrost eratically, and the compressor would be running constantly trying to achieve a good stable temp

If the defrost thermostat is bad it will need to be replaced, otherwise you will have to continuously manually defrost the unit. The noise you hear is probably the fan hitting the ice. The defrost thermostat assists in melting that ice about every eight hours.

ED5NHGXMQ00 stopped working overnight. Ice maker

Clicking could be a bad starter relay if the noise is coming from the back under the unit where the compressor is. check it here Check your compressor relay- http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/check/compressorrelay.php
The clicking could be coming from a fan, one of which is near the compressor under the unit and another is in the freezer behind the rear cover inside.
The defrost timer could be clicking. This sound would come from the fridge. Part 6 on this diagram. http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getSubComp.pd?modelNumber=ED5NHGXMQ00&productCategoryId=0165000&brandId=1198&modelName=SIDE-BY-SIDE-REFRIGERATOR&diagramPageId=00011&componentDescription=CONTROL%20PARTS&documentId=W0309019&backToLink=Return%20to%20Sub%20Components%20list
How to check everything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat.
You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.
