I found drop-rate tables at http://www.vigoro.com/ProductCategories/WeedInsectControl/SummerFertilizer/ProductDetails/Spreader+Settings.htm and http://www.bayeradvanced.com/media/productlabel/502840A_label.pdf. I don't know how accurate they are, but they are consistent with one another so I'm using them :)

Scott's no longer makes this handy helper. Do this, get some white sand and mix it with the grass seed. It will mark your lawn and help you see where you spread the seed or fertilizer. Joe

SOURCE: What would be the setting to cover 4 pounds of
Unfortunately, because granular products come in many different particle s and densities, there is no way to determine a universal pounds per thousand spreader setting. The only solution would be to do a 50 foot by 20 foot test. The 50 by 20 rule will allow you to determine an appropriate pounds per thousand rate for any product in anyspreader, but there is some work that will need to be done. *Weigh out and Place enough material in the hopper to cover 1,000 sq. ft. (Inyour case 4 pounds) *Place the spreader setting on a low setting about 1/4 of the way open. * Apply the 4 pounds of material over a 50 x 20 ft. area (This is 1,000 sq. ft.). *If material is left over, you are underapplying, and will need to increase the setting accordingly; before applying to the remainder of the lawn *If you come up short, you are over applying and you will need to decrease the setting; before applying to the remainder of the lawn

Hi,
The best way is to just place a small amount... like 5 lb in the hopper...start with it barely open and see how far you get,,, then compute from there what you need...
The settings they give you are guesamates at best and are often set to place too much... why not??? they are selling you a product!!

This spreader is covered by mainly US Patents 3,239,107 and 3,30,711. They do not state how the scale is calibrated.
Perhaps the scale settings from the 1970s will work for me. I can convert them to this unusual spreader slider scale of 2 to 18. The O. M. Scotts & Son Company also made a painted metal spreader but I don't know the product number. S in SA-0 might mean stainless. So maybe the product number is PA-0. The side view of this/these spreaders is sort of tear drop shaped, ie, it's curved. Only the top of the hopper would be a straight line.
At the bottom is an angle steel bar shaped like and unside down bar and that opens or closes off the spreader slots. There are no "bomb bay doors".
