These type of displays are not ment to be seen in direct sunlight or with a lot of light directly on them.
The backlight in the unit is used for night viewing and i'm unaware of an adjustment for it. If you are looking for a unit that you can have exposed to direct sunlight then you need to get one designed for this that will have atleast 4000nits (brightness required to shine more than the sun).

The display is fine. It's the LEDs that do the side illumination. I replaced mine with 5mm LEDs and it's as bright as ever. Just can't remember how to go from F to C now :(
