Most times-a backfire is caused by being slightly out of time or bad valves--not sure of your year make or model of car. Sometimes the timing will jump and cause the firing order to be wrong and you'll get a backfire and the car will run ruff

1997 blazer, sparks but won't start just backfires.

if it is a 4.3 v-6 with multiport injection ,it may be the spider unit. try putting gas into the throttle body and see if it starts. if it does than replace the fuel injection unit (spider unit)

I bought a 89 ford bronco it will back fire through the fuel injection when you give it gas but not all the time

sounds like it is running lean. Check engine light on?

You mean backfiring through the intake manifold right?

A tip in hesitation or backfire is usually a lean condition. If you have a MAF sensor, clean the inside exposed wires with carb cleaner. Do no touch.

Fuel going to carb, fuel pump working, no prob with fuel filter, enginge cranks over, but backfireing, enginge doesnt start. Have put starter fluid in carb, makes worse. i beliveve i have fire on points,...

I believe this is a fuel injected engine, not a carburetor engine.

Having said that, given what you've already checked and believe to be OK, I'd take a look at timing if I were you.

Could be a timing chain has either loosened or broken, allowing camshaft to get out of time relative to crankshaft. This could cause the backfire you describe.

However, before you go that far....after putting in the new plugs are you positive you got the spark plug wires correctly located ? Crossed wires could also cause a backfire.

Good luck!

Have just changed motor and box in 92 vp commodore. last engine ran but backfired on gas and struggled to run. got it going by moving fuse around on efi relay it ran for bit then dead, anyway ive taken...

it sounds like the your electronic fuel injection system is pulling to many amps and is throwing a relay maybe a loose wire grounding out? you have to go through the whole electronic fuel injection system and check each wire for breaks and proper voltage

1985 iroc tpi 305 can the fuel pressure be adjusted! i bought it used and it runs good but backfires and the exaust smells badly of gas has a new o2 and map sensor on it.

If it is fuel injected, the fuel pressure regulator is most likely the problem,if it is carbureted the mc solenoid could be the problem,or carburetor needs rebuilding.

Yamaha v star 1100 starts by cies when i give it gas, if it does rev up, it backfires

backfire is a sign of unburnt fuel. assuming your ignition and valve timing is correct the problem is either a poor spark/plug or rich mixture ie to much fuel (carburetor, not injection) or an air leak in the manifold system (exhaust) check these in this order.
