My dryer stucks at 1 minute and runs forever

My clothes are fully dry but my dryer will not stop by itself and freezes at 1 minute. A tech already came and didn't find anything wrong, the problem had mysteriously vanished. But now it happens again and while it's not a very serious problem, it shouldn't happen.

Also had a situation where Samsung Dryer DY218AEW/XAA would stick on 1 minute. Oddly it didn't usually happen when the dryer was first turned on, but subsequent to the first load it would stick at 1 min whether on Timed Dry or Moisture Sensor. Checked heater element and found it grounded. Pulled it out and found one of the coils had come off one of the ceramic supports. Refitted it and problem solved. Thanks for posting this solution!

I have the same problem with my Samsung electric dryer DV339AEG/XAC. It stuck at 1min cooling forever even though the clothes were completely dried.

I solved the problem after researching online. The heating coil inside the heating element was touching the metal casing. The ceramic insulation was not holding the coil in place in one of the sections, and the coil touched the casing at that point.

I repositioned the coil to allow better separation which essentially moved the coil further away from the casing. Once that's done, the dryer can count down passed the 1 min mark and automatically end the drying cycle, as expected.

No need to change PCB, or humidity sensor, etc.

I tested it before and after the repair using an ohm meter. The resistance across the terminals of the heating element should be approx 10 ohms but no connectivity to the casing. Before the repair, it was reading 5 ohms between 1 of the terminals and the casing. Same reading for the other terminal. Once fixed, neither terminal registered any reading on the ohm meter with the casing, the way it should be.

Make sure you unplugged the dryer from wall outlet before servicing it. A certified repairman should know what I was talking about.

Good luck.

Thanks for this. I had replaced my heating element last week due to the coil being burned open. The replacement came in a bubble envelope and was bent. I straightened it out but missed where the coil was touching. The extra continuity test to the casing lead me to the fix. Was just about to waste $124 on an unnecessry repair part.

Very appreciative of folks that share their experience on these sites. This led me to the heating element with the following symptoms and Samsung model...short story, the heating element failed but one of the leads shorted to the case, so the unit would still heat (and well). It would NEVER shut off on sensor and intermittently on timed cycles. The display would show 1 minute left, but never finish...then, sometimes show the "HE" error code. After finding this, it's obvious the dryer heating element was on for all cycles...heated or not. So now I know why all my clothes are shrunk. AND, this is a huge safety issue...HUGE.

I just fixed my Samsung DV45H7000EW this morning with the issues of being stucked at 1 minute and keep on running with heat.
I found out that the heating element was burnt and broke off at blue terminal causing shorted with the casing, in this case, current still can flow through the element because the case is connected to the ground, therefore, the heat still radiated, but the blue terminal where the element was burnt off also need to be connected to the other thermostats for them to carry out their functions. Thermostats not working, therefore, the machine keeps on running without stopping!

Does it do this on auto dry only?

  • Anonymous Apr 26, 2012

No, on both auto and timed cycles.

Hi Linda,
First I would make sure the dryer is heating. If the dryer is heating then I would check the airflow out of the machine. Check the dryer vents, and check the opening outside where the air comes out. Make sure they are all clear and the air is flowing out properly. Any blockage in the vents will cause the dryer not to dry your cloths. If you find that your dryer is not heating, you should check the voltage to the machine. You should have 220-240 volts AC. If you only have 110 volts then you may have a blown fuse or a tripped breaker in your box. Reset the breaker or replace the fuse if you find one bad. If you are getting the proper voltage to the machine and you have good airflow and still not drying well. Call for warranty service. Do not attempt to do any internal repairs yourself. If you do this will void your warranty and you sure dont want to pay for service on a 1 week old dryer.
I hope this will FixYa, and if you have any other questions please feel free to ask. I am happy to help.

SOURCE: have a retangle showing as the dryer ends it dry

I have the same problem with my dryer. I noticed this rectangle that showed up on time dry and there wasn't any code that matched this in the manual. I called samsung and they told me to flip the breaker and see if that helps. I have not tried another load, but I hope that fixed it.

You need to replace the main PCB board. They have upgraded the board.

Maytag Dryer

HI,

If your dryer seems to run forever, it could be because of a clogged vent or internal ductwork. Your dryer may have an automatic cycle that turns off the dryer when the clothes are dry. It does this with a special thermostat or moisture-sensing system.

Normally, this is what happens during an automatic cycle:

  • The thermostat tells the dryer to heat until the interior of the dryer reaches a pre-set temperature--say 135 degrees.

  • When the dryer reaches the pre-set temperature, the thermostat tells the timer to begin advancing. (If there's a moisture sensor, the timer advances only if the moisture content of the clothing is low enough.)

  • The timer advances until the interior cools, then the thermostat tells the timer to stop advancing, and tells the dryer to start heating again.

This cycle continues until the clothes are dry. But…if the vent is clogged, the dryer may never reach the proper operating temperature, so it doesn't send the signal to the timer and the dryer continues to run indefinitely, even if the clothes are completely dry. To fix the problem, clean the vent and/or internal ductwork.

My dryer takes forever to dry anything and often times will not turn on when i press start after it's been ran for a 70 minute cycle but will turn itself on after sitting for awhile my dryer is

This caused by one of two possible things. Either you have poor air flow, or a clogged vent preventing air from flowing freely and therefor making the dryer short cycle, which in turn will take you two or three times to dry yor clothes, or the heating element has gone bad, burnt in half and is making contact with the case to provide it just enough power to barely heat. The second thing is a very rare occurance. I would turn the dryer on, find out where the air vents out to, and with the dryer running, go to where it vents and check to see if there is a strong flow of air. 9 times out of 10 that is going to be your problem. Another way to check air flow is to just pull the vent off the back and let the dryer run and see if your clothes dry faster. If you do it that way and they still take a long time to dry, then you'll probably need to replace the heating element

Maytag Neptune MDG 5500 AWQ heats sporatically

your dryer has a safety feature that it will not run or heat when the door is opened. It is so no gas fumes are exhauseted into your home. Once the safety is engaged, It will not allow the dryer to restart for a short while. It should clear itself after only a few minutes. Hope this helps, good luck.

Dryer on sensor dry - gets stuck on 6 minutes and does not finish

We have been having this same problem. I had tried adjusting everything that I could think of when putting a load of laundry in and got the exact same results as you. I would select the sensor dry and it would count down just like normal until it got to 6 minutes and then it would just run forever at 6 minutes.
My husband and I searched online all this afternoon and came across what seemed way to simple to work. We removed the lint filter, unscrewed the filter housing right inside the door of the dryer, and got to the sensors. We took a damp cloth and wiped them off very well to remove any and all buildup. We wiped everything down very well to remove any built up lint and/or dirt and put everything back in place as was before. We then unplugged the dryer for about a minute and then plugged back in. We put a load of already dry clothes into the dryer and started as usual with the sensor dry. It started out at the usual 41 minutes then skipped down almost immediately to 6 minutes and then a few minutes later I heard the most beautiful sound I have heard in a long time. The Beeper signalling that the timer had counted down to the end and was finished. It had worked. Thankfully. Hope this helps you also.

LG WD-324RHD stops at 6 minutes left in drying

Your timer has gone bad and you need to replace the time. Best bet is to get a Technician out there but you can do it yoursel. It is behind the face plate where it counts down the time

Dryer gets hot when not running

Getting hot when not started is a great concern.
I have a few ideas why, but this is a fire hazard and I would suggest unplugging and either getting help or replacing.
That said, there here are a few suggestions.
1) if the element is shorted to ground, it will get power to one side of the element and heat though ground. This, again, is serious.
2) if it heats forever and doesn't get warm enough to dry, this is another indication of an element that is not working up to power. Not getting 230 across the entire element and not getting hot enough to dry.
3) Many times when a dryer runs too long, the air flow if blocked by the vent being plugged or some plug withing the dryer itself.

Again, I am very concerned about this problem and suggest you not use it until it is repaired. If you want to check the element, it is fairly easy, but unit will need disassembled.

Tumble dry is heating but takes forever to dry

check your air exhaust (including the lint filter) from the air duct connector (remove duct if necessary) on back of dryer to the exterior of the building. Somewhere, there must be air blockage.
