What is the Unknown Device listed under in the device manager? Is it under Network Adapters, Modems, etc.?

SOURCE: IBM THINKPAD a31 do not boot up

I just read a thread on this. Try pulling the mini pci network card. Or maybe one of your memory slots is bad so you could pull a memory card out and try swapping things there. Help for these issues can be found on the Lenovo site. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_states_and_blue_states

there are also user manuals and hardware replacement manuals there.

Be careful wth the mother board. It could also be your problem but hopefully it's something easier. mother boards have been known to fail when the computers are handled in such a way as to flex them.

SOURCE: ibm a31 0190 erroe

Error 0190 means you need to charge your battery. Either your battery is not charging properlty or your charger is not working anymore. If the computer works while plugged in and gives no error then it would be the battery that needs replacing. If the battery is a few years old then you may want to order a replacement. The Thinkpad A31 uses the ThinkPad Ultrabay 2000 Li-Ion Battery. You can purchase a replacement battery from this website:

http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?GroupID=38&Code=02K6646&current-category-id=4364BD0F20B94413B5AD6E684D2848E9

If the laptop doesn't work while plugged in and you dont get any lights on the battery or power indicator on the front of the laptop then you may need a replacement. Depending on which region you are in you will need a different A/C adapter. You can find a list of different A/C adapters here. The A31 uses the 72 watt power adapters on this page:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-4PJRRG#72watt

I hope this helps.

Thinkpad a31, video playback lags, have current video drivers, up to date bios, can't seem to solve this problem

Try a lightweight playback program like VLC from videolan.
If it still lags, its probably just down to the graphics capabilities of your laptop
