SELF CLEANING MAGIC CHEF OVEN BOUGHT 24 YRS AGO

I HAVEN'T USED THE SELF CLEANING OPTIONS IN YEARS AND WANT TO CLEAN IT TODAY, LOST. MY INSTRUCTIONS SAY SET THERMOSTAT TO CLEAN
turn selector to clean time bake
timer has started 3 hours.
is that all that it takes?

    I have a 15 year old magic chef...have used self cleaning before without a problem..this time it got all smoky and made an alert sound and displayed code F-2 (oven too hot). I immediately stopped self cleaning. what caused this? my smoke alarm also went off in house.

That's fairly typical but I would suggest removing the shelves and cleaning those with oven cleaner if they need it at all. Expect the door to remain locked for additional hours for safety.
The temperature rises to > 900 degrees F and is necessary to start the catalytic process that consumes the crud.

Self Clean Magic Chef Ovens, clean by Nuking the baked on grime etc... As I recall, invoking the self clean (some models will allow you to specify a time - 2 hours for light cleaning to 4 hours for heavy), will ramp the oven temperature up to as high as 900 degrees F (as opposed to the mid 300 norm). YOu probably want to remove any racks etc before hand, and wipe up crumbs etc...

Once completed, and cooled, wipe out the ash that is left over, witha damp cloth.

Self clean on some older models can cause some issues. F-3 is a sensor error. This could have been damaged by high heat or in some cases if the sensor is ok, the control doesn't know it's there.

I used mine for the first time two days ago on model KEBC147 and it will not heat now.
You might not want to try self-clean unless you have time to call for repair afterwards before
using your oven again.

Very disappointed in KitchenAid in Texas ...
