The tank needs flushed out ! heres how. Water heater manufacturers recommend flushing sediment from your storage type water heater periodically.
If your water heater is gas, set the gas valve to "Pilot" to prevent the burners from coming on while you are flushing it. If your heater is electric be sure to turn off the circuit breakers. With an electric water heater, if the water level drops below the heating elements and the thermostat turns the elements on, the heating elements will probably burn out quite rapidly. Connect a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank, Close the shut off valve on the cold inlet to the water heater. open the temperature/pressure relief valve at the top of the tank by lifting the lever. Leave the valve open. Open the drain valve at the bottom of the heater allowing the water to flow out through the garden hose. when the water is clear your finished. close pressure relief valve on top of tank and turn water back on.
Open a hot water faucet in your house, and let it run until no air bubbles come out.

Turn the heater back on, and with gas units re-light the pilot light if necessary. good-day !

SOURCE: elec. hot water heater

thanks for your question, sounds to me like you have a burned out bottom element in the tank, depending on how old the tank is, the amount of calcium in the tank, will determine if you should repair or replace, if your tank is fairly new, then you will first have to shut the power off to the tank, turn the water off at the shut off, drain the tank, write down the model #, the serial #, what brand, and the ratings on the lower element too, go to the hardware store, buy a new element and element wrench, return home, write down which wire goes where on the element, very important ! remove wiring, remove element, that's the hard part most of the time, install the new element, rewire, close all panels, refill tank, do not turn the tank on before filling !! then after tank is full, turn power back on, you will have to wait about an hour for hot water, if the unit looks to old, then replace it. I would say anything over ten years is worth replacing, hope that helped ya, thanks again for your question, let us know what happens, mr.grzz

Called GE and there is a glass vile under the burner that is defective and cuts off the oxygen.
They are mailing out a replacement to my house & have contracted a plumber to install. waiting 4 days now. They say that the glass vile incinerates and there is not any thing left to it. The burner area is full of black soot. will post again one fixed.

SOURCE: MY Atwood 6 gallon water heater will start heating

I have an Atwood GCA6AA Combination 110VAC/LP gas w/ electronic ignition. Manufactured 5/13/08. It was operated without being full of water. The 110V still heats but the gas operation appears to be locked out. I have 12VDC at the control panel. I have jumpered the thermal cut-off to no avail. I have 12VDC to the circuit board thru the BRN 3 wire. Is there a way to reset the ECO switch? Is the pricey circuit board the next step.?

Thanks,
Joel

SOURCE: The relief valve coming out

The exspansion tank is more than likly the problem. The temperature/presure valve may also be the problem. Replace both. To replace the exspansion tank turn off the supply water coming into the water heater. Open the relief valve and purge the presure off the tank. drain the water heater slightly below the temperarture/presure valve to replace. The exspansion tanks screws off. Use new teflon taope on the threads when replacing both the exspansion tank and the T&P valve. This work can be compleated by the homwowner with some mecanical inclination.

Water pressure

Here is what should be going on.
There is a length of pipe between the hot water that is in your tank and the nozzle you are expecting to get it out of.
It is really possible the are nearly 3 gallons of water in those pipes, especially if the water heater is many feet from the faucet.
Now about the drop in water pressure.
Try the cold water.
Does it do the same as the hot? Does the pressure drop after 2 - 5 minutes?
If so, suspect your pipes are clogged with sediment. How old are the pipes and the house/apartment?
Does the water contain minerals that clog pipes?
If the cold water is good, and the hot not, I should suspect there is blockage in the hot water pipes, especially going in to or coming out of the water heater., or perhaps the faucet is clogged with rust or deposits.
God bless your efforts.

My water heater is leaking and only 4 years old. Will the use of a water softener void the warranty?

The warranty should not be void by using water softener, BUT read product manual.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-manufacturers.html

1) First thing: Why is water heater leaking? Where is the leak?
http://waterheatertimer.org/Leaking-water-heater.html
For example, if you have electric water heater leaking from element, then replace element.
Replace leaking TP valve.
If water is leaking down vent pipe, and combustion chamber rusted out, then vent problem must be corrected.
These are not covered by warranty.
If tank is rusted out, then read below.

2) If water heater is rusted out after 4 years, you might have stray current corrosion.
This happens when hot and cold pipes are not connected together with a ground wire, and/or if cold water pipe is not grounded to earth.
This might not be covered by warranty.

3) Read water heater instruction manual for advisories.
Tanks rust out when anode rod is depleted. Softened water depletes anode rod faster.
Instruction manual says to check anode rod each year.
Checking anode rod is like checking oil on an engine. If oil was never checked and engine burned up, the manufacturer will not honor the warranty.
If anode rod is depleted, and tank is rusted out, the warranty might not cover the rusted tank since owner was supposed to check for anode depletion.

4) Anode rods can also be covered with calcium deposits and stop working.
This night not have anything to do with water softener, but anode stops working and tanks rusts out.
In any case the owner's manual probably says to check anode rod to prevent leaking from rusted tank

I have a Ariston Pro TI water heater. I am getting a lot of rust/junk/green/black, particals in the hot water plugging my shower heads. How do if fix this problem? Thanks Tom

If problem is hot water side only, then water heater is suspect.
1) If water heater temperature is set above 140F, it causes minerals to dissolve out of water.
2) If water heater is exposed to minerals in water, like hard water, those minerals will gather at bottom of tank.
3) If anode rod is depleted, the metal tank will begin to rust.
4) Combination of problems listed above.
To fix these problems, flush tank and replace anode rod, and possibly install water softener, install water filter, and turn down temperature setting.

I have a Reliance 501 electric water heater ... Everything works great but below the water out. Be rusty? How can I fix it?

The tank is rusting. Replace anode rod or replace water heater.
Once the anode rod depletes, then the tank starts to rust.
IF you can replace the anode rod, it will stop rusting, and then flush the rust out of water heater.
This might buy more life with same tank, but old anode rods are pretty solid and even impact wrench might not loosen it up.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Replace-anode-rod.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/Clean-sediment-out-of-water-heater.html#flush

Loosen anode rod on new tank before installing, and then inspect every 1-3 years, and 1-2 years if water is softened.

GE gas water heater smart shield manufactured date 10/2004. Water is rust colored. Have drained heater twice and it clears for a day or two and the rust color returns. Suggestions?

Anode rod is depleted and tank is rusting:
New anode rod will stop tank from additional rusting, but will not repair rust damage.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Replace-anode-rod.html

If rusting has been going on for a while, the steel tank could be weakened, and maybe rupture.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-is-leaking.html

I suggest replacing water heater, loosening anode before install, and then checking anode rod each 2-5 years so tank last longer. Also add a ground wire between hot and cold pipes to avoid water heater deterioration from stray current.
Buy new water heater from local hardware or box store and offer 10% less than price, or have them install.

I have a hot water heater model # EES 52917. It is 8 years old. The tank has rusted around the top heating element. Why has this happened and what can be done about this issue. From what I understand...

AO Smith is biggest manufacturer and ships about 140,000 units per month sold under different brands. Look at rating on tank. Is it a 9 year tank? Or 6 year? Or lifetime?
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-manufacturers.html

Number of factors can cause rust around element:

1) Element is seeping moisture: check and replace element.
Elements can start leaking any time
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-is-leaking.html

2) Anode rod can be depleted from variety of factors including water softener or calcification over anode so it will not work: Check and replace anode rod every 1-2 years with water softener, every 3-5 without water softener. New anode rod will STOP the rust, but will not repair tank that is rusted.
Tanks with longer warranties have 2 anode rods, one on hot water nipple, the other on top of tank.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Replace-anode-rod.html

3) Stray current corrosion: add a jumper wire between hot and cold pipes, and make sure tank is grounded. If there is stray current, it will deplete steel in tank if tank is not grounded.
For example one fellow had a tank that rusted out every few years until he discovered his big radio antenna was grounded back to hot water pipe and the tank was not grounded, so the interference depleted his tank.

I have a Paloma Whole Home 7.4 GPM Water Heater, it is a propane heater. I bought this heater in 07 and I get the same problem ever year. When the weather gets cold and the water is cold the hot water...

If incoming water is too cold, tankless might not have enough time to heat the water as it flows by insince the heat exchanger.

1) You can passively preheat cold water using staging tank, or tampering tank.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Tempering-tank.html

2) Buy old water heater from plumber that is not rusted out.
Replace anode rod to stop further rust.
Rinse tank with water and hydrogen peroxide to kill bacteria that results from anode rod.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Replace-anode-rod.html
Clean sediment out of bottom:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Clean-sediment-out-of-water-heater.html

3) Don't forget, a tankless heater needs to be de-limed each year, and cannot be exposed to more than 11 grains hard water.

4) Since all costs are energy, when you get tired of messing with tankless.

Low boy water heater leaks at point where cold water pipe enters caseing. The leak is below the threads. The caseing is rusted at the point where the pipe goes through. Can this rusted place be patched or...

1) Your water heater needs to be replaced.
It cannot be repaired.
Tanks rust out after anode rod is depleted unless anode is inspected and replaced 1-3 years.
Water softener causes anode to deplete quicker, so inspect every 2 years.
Also stray household current can cause tank to rust out. Put bare copper ground wire between hot and cold pipes on new heater.

2) First thing is protect yourself from tank rupture where water heater bursts open and water runs until it's shut off. Ruptured tanks are big topic in homeowner insurance industry today because they cause major damage inside house.

- Turn off heat source so tank is not under pressure:
Gas: Rotate dial to pilot so pilot light stays lit, but burner does not turn on
Electric: turn off circuit breaker

- Turn off water going into tank using shut off above tank.
- Open hot side to bathtub to relieve pressure from tank.
- Check label on side of tank to get tank specifications for replacement.

3) What to do until replacement.
You can get by for a while on leaking tank by turning it ON only when needed.
Make sure tank is full of water before turning heat source back on.
This will buy time until replacement.
Electric tank heats 21 gallons water per hour.
Gas water heater 41 gallons per hour
Shower uses 6-9 gallons hot water, bath uses 12-15 gallon hot water.

4) Additional reading so next tank lasts longer
