Computer starts in safe mode page regardless of which option you choose windows logo starts to load. then computer returns to safe mode page where you started from . The computer has xp windows media edition 2005 . No GW disk came with computer , bought new in dec. 2005 at best buy, have had problems since new with one thing or another usually with startup.
Check your Ram it might be faulty
First off, XP is not supported any longer by Microsoft? So, after awhile xp will not work with current WEB browsers, etc.
its been so long since ive used XP i cannot remember how to get in to safe mode, let alone out of it? i would try to find out online with a pc that works.
i bet he cured this 2 year ago, NO?
XP is virus magnet, and worse.
OP, did you read your manual on this PC
at gateway.comn
read chapter, called Recovery?
it is all laid out there.
it is in safe mode for vast reasons not one.
1: infected XP 100% are not (you he last one/)
2: wrong drivers loaded.
4: bad hdd and XP with it corrupted, omg double corruption.
5: bad ram. will BSOD
6: XP loves safe mode, for if you put the wrong video driver on it,sure.
F8 key is forced safe mode
if you boot say 3 times it might exit safemode.
the old days we just reload xp fresh
XP is a nasty beast best loaded fresh at any sign of trouble. or it loves to compound.
horrors. all.
why not upgrade it to windows 7,32bit.
if that costs too much run Ubuntu 16+ free.
2 choices, and XP is NEVER ONE.
NEVER SEEN ONE pc RUN FOR 14 YEARS
AND NOT ENDLESS PROBLEMS..
PCs have more single points of failures, then just about any thing made by man
ever buy a 14 year old car?
same deal. show stoppers max.
here is fails most in order.
1:; XP is the all time bad news, bears.
THE horrors OF xp ARE IN FACT ENDLESS !@
2: Bad coin cell battery at 7 year mark so is now 2nd time, wow.
3: the HDD never lastS that long, very very rare ... AS you just learned.
5y on lapflops. and 10 on desktops and high end servers (that even tell you its going dead before fact, run S.M.A.R.T tests)ask.
lapflops(sic,/pun) HDD love to fail,
do to low grade parts (hdd) and hits/bumps and spills. and those funky things , batteries.
THE ACTUAL (NOT HDD) PURE ELECTRONICS ,THInk chips, can last up to 50 or even 100 years.
even those EEPROM inside can retain data for 200 years(proof at microschip.com) ask
but never an BATTERY;'
the main battery can fail in 1 year flat
have proof(at your battery maker dot com)
so check this out...
NASA uses a Plutonium battery (plutonium-238.)

I have many old electrons in my lab
even high end Tek scopes that run like new
after 40 years of use.
but all batteries in mine are kept fresh
or I FAIL.
the first useful digital scope. IMO , I have.

I have 1965 and newer fully running test equipment ,LAB and and OLD 70's Kenwood
stereo gear at home all 100% prefect.
so learn that batteries is first.
then check overheating.
or connectors loose
there are no good XP install disks now
none sold new but new old stock (on fleabay)
and the activation keys can be no good
others steal them making your legal one dead
and then fails (activation).
XP is 100% dead, ok>
RIP XP, 13 year run, $10 per year, cheap no?
RIP
the most happy persons on earth are at MS.
NO MORE XP support, yeah , I agree ! RIP XP
may it never return ever. (unless in ROM)
scrap it, or load w7 on it fresh.
test the HDD fully, first,ask.
run linux on it for free
or with say a new SSD
load on w7-32b,see if likes relecs.
w10 is hopeless here, too old.
good luck
2005 GATEWAY pC 14 YEARS OLD RELIC.

1:yugo cars
2:susuki ,deawoo,Isusu cars.,mg,triumph,austin
3;Edsel cars., Oldsmobile
4; Packard bell. and all old GATEWAY
5:emachines, etc.
6:anything with batteries. or fragile screens
I'd for sure load linux or w7 -32bit on this old dog, just to see if can fly.
what limits success on this PC
is these factors (or helps)
Intel Pentium D 830 / 3 GHz
bad.
good ram 2 GB / 4 GB (max)
good hdd 320 GB, SSD 10x better
good. Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet
bad , no wifi but super easy add.

SOURCE: I need a system recovery disk for my Gateway Desktop
If the computer originally came with a backup software disk, you can try contacting gateway for a replacement. If the backup software was instead on a dedicated partition of the original drive you will need an XP home system disk, in which case you can probably get a better deal off the shelf at a retailer. Be sure you get the full version and not an upgrade, as you don't have any windows system currently installed for an upgrade to detect. If your Gateway has a Windows XP COA affixed and you can borrow a full XP Home installation disk from a friend you can install from that disk inputting your number from your COA when prompted. (don't use your friends COA) Microsoft will recognize this as a genuine restored installation so long as you have not changed any other major hardware in the system, and you input the same information for activation as you did originally. And you can get the service packs and other updates just as you always have.
Or: you could become a Linux user for free. For the Linux newbie I would have to recommend the Ubuntu or PCLinuxOS for their user-friendliness. Again that's FREE! if you try it and don't like it you're out exactly $0.00! My systems have been Linux exclusively for about 7 years, and am kinda partial to the Mandriva distributions, though I tried PCLinuxOS a while back and have had that on this system ever since, though it has it's quirks. But don't all systems?

SOURCE: Gateway GT4010 bootup disk
If you have good internet access, you can download a live Linux distribution such as Knoppix, and burn the it to CD. Don't let the word "Linux" scare you out of this, Knoppix is very user-friendly. And there is loads of resources available online. Anyway, burn the CD, and boot the computer from it. It will take a little time to boot, as it is a live version running only in RAM. It has very powerful applications though, and you can access your hard drive from it so long as the drive is not corrupted beyond readability. If you can access the hard drive, you can view your files, and copy the files to a USB drive. Once you have your data, you can then shut down and restore windows if the drive will cooperate, or install to a new drive if necessary.
!!! Knoppix will not write to or erase any data from your hard drive without you give it permission to do so !!! It is about your safest option in that respect.
Just google Knoppix to find download sites. Most sites have instructions for downloading and burning your copy. And it's all FREE!!!

SOURCE: TV tuner and Cablevision box incompatible
Thanks for your update ertbs500, you may be able to just run an HDMI from that cable box to the PC but I have never done that and I have never done a TV tuner card either.
Low signal strength makes no sense at all seeing as how the coaxiel is plugged DIRECTLY in to the tuner card. Low signal would be from wireless. Maybe it is talking about wireless and somehow the coaxle is not transmitting signal for some reason, or the PC is not seeing it. Sorry I can not be of more help! I would look online for forums or guide on how to set up Media Center for your tuner card.
SOURCE: Gateway 505gr became unresponsive, on reboot windows cannot load
Hello guys,
This problem would arise only when the motherboard doesn't work properly. Check with your nearest gateway service center to get your CPU work again. That would be the only thing to be done.
