This depth sounder always worked fine. When switched "ON" the only display on the screen are lines crossed horizontally and vertically. Nothing else works!

I had the same problem and contacted Garmin. This is being caused by a software issue that started when the government updated the software in their WAAS satellites. The Garmin website will give you instructions on how to correct this but I have listed them below:
Power on unit
Press enter to get past the I Agree screen
Now you should be on the satellite page, press the menu button one time
Highlight WAAS off and press enter
By doing this, the unit should not shut down.
I followed these instructions and my 168 Sounder is working fine.

Try updating your unit's internal software via the Garmin.com website. There was a new satellite launched which has caused problems such as this, and the update fixes it.
If this solves your problem, please come back and tell us, and rate our solution. Thank you.
SOURCE: Furuno 1622 doesn't work, water coming out cable at screen!
yes the cable should be replaced if you are lucky, the unit is still OK (display) Try the new cable, draped across the boat before rigging. If fault exists with new cable, replace system, or find a new display on ebay
SOURCE: I have a furuno fcv
you need an MB1100 matching box
has the 10 pin pigtail for your sounder and accepts bare wire input from your ducer
this will also ensure that all power from sonar get to ducer, but it from me if you like

SOURCE: depth sounder problem
If the transducer is mounted off of level, an error is introduced due to angle. It is a fixed percent offset, say 10%. so 10 feet reads 11 and 100 reads 110. There is an offset function to read depth below ducer, depth below keel, and depth below waterline, but these are fixed amounts in feet, not a percentage. Look at the transducer when it is operating, boat angle considered.
