Refrigerator not cooling

It is a kenmore elite bottom freezer the freezer is blowing cold air but the refrigerator is not

  • vmvirgili Nov 16, 2008

The ducts in the back panel were iced up in the freezer. Used a hairdryer to melt the ice. Seems to be working. Thank you very much!!

  • vmvirgili Nov 16, 2008

I don't know what I did when I typed this in the first time. But here goes again. There was a buildup of ice on the outside of the fins not real heavy. I'm thinking from what you said maybe the freezer was set to cold and freezing the frost and water before it could go away. The drain seems fine when I was using the hair dryer I had to use my shop vac to collect the water from the tray. There was some ice also on the tubes inside the fins. Any help you can give me to keep this from happening again would be appreciated. Thanks for all of your help!!

This could be that it is out of balance. Set the temperature settings to midway. This control can easily get the fridge temp out out of balance if over adjusted. If you already have the tmp control at midway then you need to make sure there are no obstructions to the duct that carries the cold air from the freezer to the fresh food section to cool it. Check for ice buildup or any kind of blockage. Let me know what you find.

  • Charles Caldwell Nov 16, 2008

Did you set the temp setting to mid way? Next you need to find out what caused this in the first place. There could be a problem with the defrost system. Was there ice or just frost? If it was just frost then there probably is a problem with the defrost system If you found ice ( ice and frost form for deferent reasons) Then we know that the defrost system is at least heating up to melt the frost. You may want to check the drain under the evaporator behind the evap cover. But we do need to find out why this happened so it does not happen again and cause you more problems. Let me know, please?

  • Charles Caldwell Nov 16, 2008

The reason I wanted you to clarify if there was any ice is that ice and frost form for diferant reasons. If a defrost system is not working and defrosting the evaporator, it will be blocked with frost and no ice. Ice can only be formed from heat melting the frost, turning it to water and then freezing it. So, you found ice blocking part of the evaporator and you said you had to use a vacuum to remove some of the water as you used the hair dryer to melt the frost. If the drain system was not blocked in any way then the water would have drained into the drain pan below the fridge without any vaccuming. The drain pan heater may not be working good and some of the water is freezing at the end of the drain tube and in the freezer compartment. The only other reason could be a spill, leaking ice maker or a leaking ice maker fill tube. What I`m saying is if there was any ice buildup. What we have done so far is only a temp fix. This problem will come back. With what you ahev told me. If you have anymore problems with the evaporator getting blocked then check the drain system and someof the other reasons I have mentioned.Let me know if I can help you any farther. I will be glad to.

Why is Refrigerator warm, Freezer is cold

This seems to be a common problem with bottom freezers.
Usually there is ice buildup in the cold air passage from the freezer to the refrigerator. There are videos on Youtube that will help.

We have a Kenmore Elite Trio (bottom freezer- Model#596 73502201-bought 2004) and both the fridge and freezer are blowing cool air but not cold. Food in freezer has defrosted and the fridge temp. is much...

Check to see if the evaporator behind the back metal cover on the freezer side is all frosted up, if it is, then it will probably be the defrost heater which is bad and letting it clog with frost causing low or no airflow. The heater is not expensive and can be ordered online on ebay.

Refrigerator is not cold

Hi Louis,

This is what has happened. Due to the door being opened for so long moisture which is naturally in the air has collected on your freezer coils. What you need to do is turn the whole thing off for at least 24 hours. Open the doors and put some towels around it to let the frost melt out.
All the air that gets cooled in your unit gets cooled by a fan that pulls air through those coils. Once the frost has melted out of them it should cool just fine.

Bottom frezzer is working but fridge is not blowing cold air

Refrigerator gets cold air from freezer compartment. Either the air flow is blocked by food items or ice, or the recirculating fan is not working.

The most common failure is that the freezer coils get all iced up becuase the defroster timer, defroster thermostat, or heater has stopped working.

When it's running, you should feel cold air blowing out of the vents that are in the fridge, otherwise, the 'air tower' (air vent) is blocked with ice.

If you manually defrost the whole thing, and it runs fine for a day or so, then it's not defrosting properly. If you manually turn the defroster timer, and you don't hear the scorching/hissing/gurgling of the defroster working, then that would confirm a fault in the defroster circuits.

Based on the following thread, it's probably a bad defrost thermostat.
