Bought used laptop w/o hard drive, installed new hard drive, before ordering recovery disks (tried dell recovery disks, didn't work) how do i tell if cd drive is working to load toshiba recovery disks? Don't want to spend more cash if drive isn't going to work.

Hi, The laptop you purchased is an older model. It will use most any IDE laptop hard drive. The drive you mentioned from your Dell will work in it. You will need to pull the hard drive and put the sliders or hardware off the old one on to the new one. Look here for more info on your laptop. Look under portables.

The systems disc is for the drivers and utilities, and, yes, there should have been two discs with the machine. The A45 is new enough that it should have come with an XP disc, not 98. I believe there was a mix up and you have the wrong disc. If you can get the operating system to load with the recovery disc you have, then you can get the drivers at the link below. Some two disc sets will not load an operational system unless you have both discs. Since you were running XP before, I don't think you're going to be happy with 98. I'm going to suggest that you purchase an XP disc, or contact Toshiba, and let them know that the wrong disc came with the machine, they might send you the right disc. If you do have to purchase an XP disc, simply load the system, then go to the link bellow and download the drivers. If you need any further assistance, feel free to ask.

You will need to talk to whoever you got the HD from. It should have come with a format disk since HD have barely changed over the last ten years they can still be setup for just about anything form FAT16 to the latest Mac use.
The reason you are having troubles is that the HD doesn't know what format you are giving it. Whenever i have bought a new HD it comes with a disc to format then you are good to use the OS disc to load up it is possible that the recovery disc is setup only for a Toshiba setup HD and not another generic format. you might what to call the toshiba help line (800) 457-7777 that is straight from their website. Best of luck my friend
