This can be caused by RF feedback. RF is radio frequency energy - the same energy that your transmitter puts out onto the coax cable & antenna.

RF feedback is similar to audio feedback in that some of the output re-enters the circuit in a place it doesn't belong or is designed. RF feedback is a direct result of a poorly matched antenna system as shown by an SWR meter. A standing wave ratio or "SWR" of 2.0:1 - 2:5.1 (read this as: two point zero to one and two point five to one) or greater is generally accepted as the worst SWR a transmitter can tolerate - but also requires lowering RF power (wattage) to continue transmitting.

Some common sources of high SWR are: 1) wrong cable type (usually a 50 ohm cable is used), 2) damaged cable, 3) untuned antenna, 4) damaged previously tuned antenna, etc. The SWR of an antenna system should be checked and adjusted as needed to assure maximum power transfer to the antenna. If the system has a high SWR, the antenna reflects some of the RF energy back on the coax - into the radio. The effects can be tingles / burns on the lips - if using a mic with a metal guard, noise, and erratic operation of some rig settings. This energy is unexpected and can cause all sorts of strange radio operations and is not an uncommon occurrence in a situation such as this.

You can correct this problem by purchasing or borrowing an SWR meter or bridge designed to work in the range of frequencies that your CB uses. Follow the directions included to lengthen or shorten antenna elements as needed. An ideal SWR is 1.1:1. Generally, any value of SWR less than 1.5:1 is considered very good. A check of SWR on the low, mid and highest frequencies will give you an idea as to how well the antenna works on the frequencies you use, and let you know which frequencies you should avoid.

Good luck!

This has an LED channel display, which is the same as the Cobra 29. You can pick up a new one, there are a few color options available. You need to be very proficient with de-soldering and soldering small parts. You need a desoldering iron or desoldering wic, and no bigger than a 30 watt sodlering iron, any bigger can burn the foil trace, and some solder. You have to open the case, remove the faceplate screws, remove the faceplate, remove the channel selector/pcboard, and the channel display pc board together. Now you desolder the pins of the display, aproximately 20, remove the diplay, insert the new display observing direction (make sure it is face with the decimal to the right place), solder each pin to the pc board, and clip off the excess section of the pins (which is sticking out of the back of the channel display pc board. If you have changed to a blue display, you need to remove the orange or green cover, and replace it with a blue one (I make mine from blue transparant report covers) and hot glue it to the inside of the faceplate where the old one would have been. The reason for this is that the blue light will not shing blue thourgh a green or orange cover, and if you use clear, the display will be extremely bright, and the blue cover will knock down the glare a little. Now just put the radio back together and fire it up.

Now with that said, if you think you may have any trouble with this, you can take it to any cb shop and they should be able to help you.

SOURCE: an old cobra 29 23 channel Cb that has no audio or key up

This is a typical indication of the finals being blown. Probably have to take it to a shop, but it would be expensive compared to the value of the radio

GL1800 Goldwing with BikeMP3 cb. Intermittent issue. Somewtimes will TX and RX, other times even with squelch set to 1, nothing. Pinched wire or CB unit itself.

You probably have a damaged mic cord. These are not overly rugged. You might want to replace the mic cable with a quality Beldon mic cable.

Have a galaxy dx959 and it makes a humming sound through the speaker only when the mike is keyed and goes away when the power is turned down. all items are stock including mike any input?

Sounds like you are getting some feedback from somewhere. I would check inside the mic connector for a shorted, loose, or twisted wire then check inside the mic itself for same, if you can, try a different mic that is wired for your radio, my bet is there is some stray RF floating around somewhere.
Hope this helps,

Codra 29ltd clas. trans and receve only at close range

Try a different antenna. In my opinion, Moonraker antennas are the best. However they are the biggest of all CB antennas. They're smallest antenna measures close to about 40ft long. They're made for long range communication. They are pricey but well worth it. I recently got a Moonraker for my Galaxy DX2517 base station, it has a 50ft metal whip with power supply box which increases the output power. I can talk all the way to canada just using the pure power of my radio, and I live in Virginia. I'm telling you, if you get a Moonraker, you're set for life. And about your radio problem, umm, it might be your antenna, sometimes when you have a dual antenna input, it messes with the modulator and the frequency amplitude. It's best to just have one antenna.

Hope this helps!

No response to radio check

Try this: find another CB radio and tune it into the same channel as the other one and talk on the one you have trouble with and if you hear yourself on the other CB, your radio is fine. But if no one can hear you, you might need to find a better antenna, I'd recommend Shakespear or Moonraker antennas. They're pricey, but worth the money.
However, if you still can't hear your voice on another radio, you may have either a Mic problem or a Transmitter problem. If so, use a different Mic and see if that solves the problem. If not, you may need to get another transmitter or new radio.

Lost channels in a galaxy 66v cb radio

as far as the transmit frequency changing while you have the mic keyed this is normal, the transmit frequency is a little different than the receive, as far as the lost channels go you need to check the galaxy website and check to see if thier is any fixes listed. if none is listed then you can send the tech's a e-mail and tell them your problem and they will advise you on what to do.
