My burned dvd will only play for a few minutes then freezes

if you have the song playing at the same time its burning it will slow down.

You may have encountered a problem that will eventually hit most users who write their own DVD's. The media used to create your DVD's is not immune from damage or aging, and will eventually fail.

You might try to play it on a computer from one of your familly members or friends. Different drives are better at potentially flawed discs. If one of them plays okay, it may be possible to copy your original disc on that computer to make a new copy.

Obviously, how you treat the DVD's you create plays a big part in how long they will last. If you handle them only by the edges, never lay them down on other surfaces where they might get scratched or attract dust, and always put them back in their sleeves or cases, that will help.

The quality of the blank DVD media is also a big factor in how long the media will last. You can search on the web for quality comparisons of DVD blank media to help you make a purchase decision. No media is perfect, and there are error-correcting routines that are used by your computer software to account for the minor surface imperfections that will be present on any blank DVD disc. But there are definitely DVD media makers who produce higher quality blank media than other low-cost makers. This is truly a case of "you get what you pay for".

One other note: While your blank media may say it is rated for "16X" (meaning it can be created using a disc rotation speed that is 16 times the normal rotation speed), I personally never burn my DVD's at the rated speed. Frankly, I don't trust that having the laser beam speed across the disc at 16 times the normal rate is a reliable way to create a long-lasting disc. So I always access the recording options for my disc burning software and set the burn speed to a lower value, like 4X, so ensure the laser has enough time to create a longer lasting burn image on the disc. This applies to CD blanks as well, where some of the drives support 52X speeds. While I don't have any research to back up my disc burning recommendations, I just feel better not pushing my equipment and my disc media blanks to their upper limits.

Download and install windows 7 codec pack, then try again, or you can download windows movie maker, its free and works well

• Do you have any third party CDDVD burning software?
• Are you able to burn DVD's using windows explorer?

First I would suggest that you try burning using another DVD and check if it works.

Method 1

Try one or more of the following:
Verify that the DVD burner is connected properly to your computer and powered on, and that any necessary software drivers for the DVD burner are installed. You can check your hardware settings in the Device Manager by doing the following:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Hardware and Sound.
3. Click Device Manager.
• Make sure that the videos you're trying to burn are not corrupted. To see whether the videos you want to burn is corrupted, try playing or viewing them using Windows Media Player. If the files don't play using the Player, Windows DVD Maker cannot burn them.

• Choose a slower burning speed for your DVD burner by doing the following:
1. Return to the Add pictures and video to the DVD page, and then click Options.
2. In the DVD burner speed box, select Medium or Slow.

The laptop should have come with CD/DVD burning software preloaded. Acer's specs page for your model says it comes with NTI Media Maker. The program will have help information available to guide you through, and you can find more help online. If you just want to write data files onto a DVD, the process typically is not much more than dragging files to a layout window and telling the program to burn the disc. This gives you a way to back up data, or to store movies in formats you can view on a computer (AVI, MPG, etc.).

On the other hand, if you're asking how to make a video DVD that will play in a regular DVD player like a commercial movie, maybe with features like menus or scene selection and such, the process for making that kind of DVD is more involved. You need some DVD authoring software. NTI may offer that capability, but I'll admit I have never looked.

In most cases, the software that comes preloaded on computers is a limited version of some commercial product. The computer manufacturers get paid to include the program, and the software company hopes you'll buy the full version when you discover the limitations. If you don't want to pay for software, there are free, more full-featured programs available for downloading.

For general CD and DVD burning, I use CDBurnerXP. To make video DVDs, I use a program called DVDStyler. Both are open-source, meaning they are 100% free to download and use, and they both offer a lot of features.

Computers use video files such as AVI, WMV, MPG etc.

DVD players use VOB video files, and will not recognise the computer video files.

Unfortunately, Windows Moive Maker cannot create VOB files - you will need another piece of software to convert the WMV file Windows Movie Maker creates to a VOB.

A lot of disc burning programs (e.g. Nero) include video converters. See if you've already got one on you computer.

If not, try Googling 'WMV to VOB'. There's quite a few free ones out there.

There are several, but most common are DVD+R and DVD-R
Look on Tray of drive to see
Also, some cheap high-speed CDROM are ****. 40-52x not really ;-)
Buy good CDRoms

If still no joy...
Could also be that a new device or proggie grabbed the DVD drive IRQ
Reinstall last Service Pack again
Reboot
Retry

Windows movie maker is just a generic xp add on that I am sure was an after thought and never will give you good quality movies it does alright and should give acceptable results if you have a good graphics card and vga card but try useing nero to burn movies the burning speeds can be slowed right down to give exellent quality and if you just want a reasonable quality dvd you can turn the burn speed up to burn faster but you always sacrafice quality for speed on any dvd burning program unless you go get a profestional one and upgrade to much higher quality graphics and vga cards you also need a good deal of ram to
