The built in mic for my acer aspire 4720z used to work for things like skype and gmail chat. but now when i try to call someone all they hear is loud static. I re-installed the driver and have played with the control panel. When I use my headset mic plugged into the 3.5 mm jack, that works fine in everything. The built in mike is very quiet in sound recorder and Audacity, another recording software. If I crank up the mic boost I can hear myself in those two programs, but with a fuzzy background. Anyway, I have no idea what's going on. Please help!

You did great troubleshooting for your laptop. If the sound is fine and good for the headset, your sound card is probably not the problem. The driver aspect, should not be the problem either if it works with your headset. So herein lies the dilemma...the problem is most likely due to some physical componenent between the built-in mike and the computer case itself. You should take it to a laptop repair shop and see what they can do. It has nothing to do with the software or the sound card. It is the physical component of the built-in mike and speakers. Get that checked out and you should be good to go!
Based on sybabe solution,That leaves me with :
1-The built in Mic element has gone bad or
2- The contacts in 3.5 mm internal jack port are not fully closed when an external mic is not present.
Hope thats helps...
