On my HP Officejet 6300, vertical black lines appear on faxes sent and copies made using the auto document feeder, but not when I use the flatbed (glass). What causes this and can I fix it myself? Thank you.
If you lift up the lid on your scanning device you will notice a glass strip about 1 inch thick and then the large area of glass used for flatbed scanning. The 1 inch strip is used for ADF scanning. Because your papper is moving across the glass strip, any dot, smudge or scratch will affect your scanning and cause verticial lines down the page. Sometimes the dot is not visible to the eye. Get some glass cleaner that has alcohol in it and thoroughly clean the glass strip and it should solve your problem. If it turns out to be a scratch on the glass then cleaning won't help.
On HP Photosmart C7280 had problem of vertical black line only when using sheet feeder/ADF scanner. I could see no mark on the small glass ADF strip but cleaned & wiped & wiped it carefully anyway with no luck. After reading this, decided to revisit and inspected small glass with very powerful light and magnefying glass. Sure enough there was a nearly invisible spot, which I was able to remove with concentrated effort using (in this case) rubbing alcohol. Scanning/Copying using ADF now work fine.
I finally found the solution to vertical lines when copying via feeder. Press menu and keep pressing OK until you get to enhancements, then make sure you press NONE (for enhancements) I discovered this AFTER cleaning the rollers, separator pad and plastic rivets. Marilyn Pieters
