SOURCE: Why two black ink cartridges?

The larger of the two cartridges is used for text only. The smaller is used for color printing. Its purpose is to eliminate the need for a "Processed" black (black being mader by the color inks).\

SOURCE: cannon ink jet quit printing black

To solve the printing problem..

# Hold the cartridge upside down, with the bar-code label facing you and take a damp paper towel. # Use the towel to wipe the printhead of the cartridge on the bottom (where the ink comes out). Wipe the printhead horizontally in one direction only (left to right). # Continue doing this until it looks clean. # Then dab the cartridge on the towel to make sure the ink is flowing. # Next, look inside the printer and locate the carrier that holds ink cartridges. Caution: Make sure the cartridges are not installed at this point.
1. Look for a shiny piece of metal underneath the contacts at the back of the carrier. 2. Take a damp cotton swab (use water only!) and wipe along the bottom of the shiny metal piece. Note: You may need more than one swab.
# Reinstall the cartridges, making sure you snap them correctly into the printer.

SOURCE: error u043 with MP610 Cannon. cyan cartridge not

This error indicate that the printer fail in detection the certain ink. The simplest one is to compare the ink tank with the good one. If this doesn't fix the problem, carriage unit or logic board might be faulty.

SOURCE: Canon MP610 out of black ink

Cannon Pixma MP610 - when the black ink is empty and you receive the replace ink message, then hold down the "cancel" button for 5 seconds or so and it the printer automatically bypasses the problem. It does work but Ive had mixed success in terms of the print quality when doing this.

yes because u installed both cartridges. if you only installed the color it will still print black by mixing the three colors (known as composite black) try to change the black first or remove it and use the composite black to print black text.

Canon MP610 Printer

You cannot switch to the larger black cartridge. You are using a CMYK (Cyan, Yellow, Magenta, Black) format for printing color images.

The larger cartridge is used for text only. The smaller black cartridge is used for color or graphic images.

If the black cartridge was not present, every time you needed black in an image, it would have to come from the composition of Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. This would greatly reduce the life of the color cartridges.
