Not know the model of your PC, here is general info:

Some motherboard makers clearly silkscreen the identity of the connectors onto the motherboard itself, but you usually have to consult a diagram in the manual or quick reference guide to determine the identity of each set of pins. The good news is that the jumpers from the front panel almost universally have ID markings these days. A few years ago, you sometimes had to engage in a puzzle-solving activity to determine the correct jumpers.

The jumper pins are usually on the left corner, if you are looking down on the motherboard with the front toward you. You may need a flashlight and /or a magnify glass to look at the pins.

You Will see a row of pins labeled Front Panel. On this row of pins you will , in most cases, see the letters : HDD Led, SPK, Reset, PW,PW led
These will correspond to the front panel connectors.

I just pulled a New eMachine motherboard off the shell, and the pins are labeled Front Panel, and there are color coded.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

How to hook up the face plate of a emachine w3400 Wich includes 3 wires 1 power butten and 2 led lights

Look at the pinout of the Front Panel header, of the eMachine W3400's motherboard.

The plastic front of the computer is the Front Panel.
The area of pins on the motherboard, that the cables (Wires) from the Front Panel connect to,
is the Front Panel header.

The motherboard for an eMachines W3400 desktop computer is an MSI ms-7145
(Micro Star International)

Orient the motherboard in your view so that we are both looking at it the same way.
Processor to the Top, Ram Memory slots to the Right, white PCI slots (3) to the Bottom.

JFP1 is the Front Panel header.
(Junction Front Panel 1)

JFP1 is on the Bottom Right corner. There are two columns of pins arranged vertically.
(The JFP1 header runs parallel to the Right side of the motherboard)

The Left side column of the JFP1 header is numbered Odd.
Starting at the Top and going Down, the pins are numbered;
1, 3, 5, 7, and 9

The Right side column is numbered Even.
Starting at the Top and going Down, the pins are numbered:
2, 4, 6, and 8.
There is NO Pin 10

A) Pins 1 and 3 are for the HarDDrive Activity LED light. (HDD)
If the LED light is dim will operating switch the wires around

B) Pins 5 and 7 are for the Reset switch. (Reset button)
> IF Used

C) Pin 9 is Not used. (NC. No Connection)

D) Pins 2 and 4 are for the Power On LED light (If dim switch the wires around)

E) Pins 6 and 8 are for the Power On switch. (Power On button)

Trace the wires back to the Power On switch. Even if it means temporarily removing part of the Front Panel to see.

Same with the LED lights.
See which wires go to the Power On LED, and HDD Activity LED. (Harddrive Activity LED)

Follow the 3 wires, and tell me where they go to on the Front Panel.
USB port?
Memory Card Reader?
Firewire port? (a1394)

Need to re-attach power button cable, hard drive

The manual for your computer is available from emachines, p.168 shows the info you need (replacing the front I/O panel)
http://downloads.emachines.com/userguides/8511279_eM_NG3_chassis_HW_ref_en.pdf

The good news is that you can't harm the computer by connecting the wires wrong and the bad news is they just won't work the way they are supposed too if not connected properly. The LED's must have the correct polarity to work.
In general, if you look real close (as in magnifying glass and flash light) you will see the ID for each set of pins is printed on the motherboard (pwr, rst,HDD,pwr sw,speaker) Just match what it says on the motherboard to what it says on the wires. Don't worry if you get the polarity wrong. If a light doesn't work just swap the two wires. The colored wires should be positve (+), though. The reset (rst) and power switch (pwr sw) wires don't require polarity.
These instructions are for most computers in general, YMMV.

Connection between emachines case and motherboard

Most likely the wires are for power, reset, and hard disk light. Touch one pair together momentarily, if your compter comes on then connect those wires to the power button. After the computer is on, connect the other two pair to the hard disk light one pair at a time until you see the light activate when the hard disk is running. Then connect the remaining pair to your reset button.

Power button wiring

A quick google determined your emachines model w2040 is equipped with FIC motherboard AM37. Download the manual from
http://www.fic.com.tw/support/motherboard/motherboard.aspx?model_id=107
You'll find the pinout info for your wiring on page 13.
Most motherboards also have the pinouts silkscreened onto the board itself.
