Olympus battery charger flashes red when battery is inserted.

The battery is an Olympus LI 428 which came with the camera, an Olympus FE 280/X-820. I have only ever charged it twice in eleven months, as I don't use the camera much. The battery does not appear to be charging. Help please!

I started using the my Olympus FE-340 for the first time in a few months and every time but once, the charger flashes when inserted and the battery doesn't charge! What's going on?

  • cmarchand Nov 19, 2013

I had the same problem and bought a new battery. Thre red light kept flashing. I cheched the charger and one of the contacts was stuck down. I pulled on it with a pair of tweezers making it as high as the other two contacts.Plugged both the old and new battery in and presto! they charged.

  • cmarchand Nov 19, 2013

check the contacts of the charger. Make sure they all are at the same height. My middle contact was lower than the other two. I pulled the contact until it was equal in height to the other two. My battery now charges.

Just leave the yellow light blinking and eventually the battery charger green light appears and battery is fully charged.

Never throw away a lithium ion battery! These chargers are low voltage (2v output) and very sensitve to even slightly dirty contacts. There may be a film on them even if they seem shiny. Take a pencil eraser or art eraser and clean the contacts - almost always fixes the problem.

My light was flashing ... and Still after I came back to check after 30 mins. So I cleaned the contacts on the battery and the charger with a antistatic brush ... but im sure probably an old toothbrush would be fine. Now my light is solid red ... Thank You

If the charger is flashing red then the battery was allowed to fully discharge. You can either buy a new battery or force the charger to charge the battery. The way you do this is by applying a voltage across the charging terminals while inserting the battery. I opened the case of my charger and attached wires from a AAA battery to the corresponding wires attached to the charging deck (+ to red and - to black). Then I slipped the battery into the charger and plugged the charger into tho wall. The light should illuminate solid red (no flashing). Then immediately (and carefully) remove the wires from the charger.

Clean with eraser and or slide in and out of charger a few times.

I wouldn't recommend trying the other solutions becuase if the battery explodes you are in the hospital for a while and will have to replace many things besides a camera battery.

Another one to send to MythBusters.

Dang, I was fighting this for several years now, thinking this time I’m done with this and the Camera will end up in the dumpster.
Then decided to give it to my kid and order a knockoff battery that is to last a couple of hours only.
Bumped international this thread about blinking light.
I have cleared the battery terminals and was able to charge the batter!
You’re guys are awesome!
Thanks a ton!

Reason already explained in solution #4: If the charger is flashing red then the battery was allowed to fully discharge.
Solution #2 did not work in my case so I connected an adjustable power supply unit to the battery to 'inject' the initial juice. Slowly increased the voltage until current reached 500mA and hold it for 2 seconds. (Do not connect the battery for a longer time since it may burn or explode!) Then slipped the battery into the charger and voila - steady red light !

I had this problem with my Stylus 600. I noticed that the contacts on the battery were slightly discolored and I believe the problem was due to poor electrical contact between the battery and the charger. I used a pencil eraser to clean the contacts and the problem was solved.

I lost the battery charger of my olympus fe-320. Can i charge it using the usb port ?

No, you cannot charge the battery in the camera via the USB port. You need to use the LI-40C or LI-41C charger or equivalent.

One source for a replacement charger (along with a battery and a camera case) is

How to start since the power button does not react? How to charge battery?

Try recharging the battery. If that doesn't work, try a new battery.

Use the supplied charger to charge the battery. If you've lost the charger, you can get an LI-41C charger from Olympus. You can also get LI-40B or LI-42B batteries from them.
